Republicans Block Bill on U.S. Attorneys |
Senate Republicans blocked a bill Thursday that would curb the Justice Department's power to fire and replace federal prosecutors. Democrats had sought to give the courts a role in the appointments of U.S. attorneys, to GOP opposition. The objection by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., to the proposal was long anticipated. So Democrats used the occasion to complain anew about the firings of at least seven prosecutors, some without cause, under a little-known part of the Patriot Act. Democrats say Attorney General Alberto Gonzales used the law to get around the Senate confirmation process and install Republican allies. ``I believe that their intent was to bring in people from the outside to give some of their bright people an opportunity,'' said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. ``That is wrong.''... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-6418467,00.html

U.S. authorities to start massive DNA gathering from population |
The federal government is finalizing rules that would encourage the collection of DNA samples from everyone arrested by federal authorities, as well as any illegal immigrant detained by federal agents for any reason. A little-noticed amendment to last month's renewal of the Violence Against Women Act authorized this new, sweeping DNA collection policy. The amendment, introduced by Arizona Senator Jon Kyl and Texas Senator John Cornyn, was passed on a voice vote, meaning that no legislators had to go on the record as supporting or opposing it. Currently, the federal government takes DNA samples only from convicted felons. Seven states collect DNA samples from all arrestees, but only two of these allow the sharing of this data with the federal government. "What this does is move the DNA collection to the arrest stage," said Erik Ablin of the Justice Department. Trouble is DNA can be easily planted, do you trust the government... http://www.newstarget.com/021612.html

Activist gets 5 years for Holocaust denial German court prosecutes man who disseminated anti-Semitic propaganda |
A German court on Thursday convicted far-right activist Ernst Zundel and sentenced him to five years in prison for Holocaust denial in a case that underlined Germany's determination to prosecute people who claim the Nazis didn't murder 6 million Jews. The 67-year-old Zundel, who was deported from Canada in 2005, was convicted on 14 counts of inciting hatred for years of anti-Semitic activities, including contributing to a Web site devoted to denying the Holocaust — a crime in Germany. Zundel showed no emotion when Judge Ulrich Meinerzhagen read the verdict, only nodding occasionally. Zundel, who has also lived in Tennessee, and his supporters argued that he was a peaceful campaigner being denied his right to free speech. His attorney, Ludwig Bock, said he would appeal. Being Politically Incorrect is now a crime. Better watch what you think or say ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17175756/

Storm leaves behind snow, ice, frustration |
A killer snow and ice storm that hit the Midwest and Northeast left behind huge snow piles, frigid temperatures, and slippery traffic jams Thursday. The storm was blamed for at least 15 deaths. In Pennsylvania, National Guard vehicles loaded with food, water, baby supplies and fuel delivered help to hundreds of motorists stranded on Interstate 78 Wednesday night and Thursday morning while crews try clear up a 50-mile backup on the icy, hilly highway. The Guard began helping the motorists at about 9 p.m. Wednesday and was still at more than 12 hours later, said Lt. Col. Chris Cleaver, a Guard spokesman. Utilities reported more than 95,000 homes and businesses without electricity early Thursday in Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and Delaware because of high wind and iced-up power lines.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WEATHER/02/15/cold.weather.ap/index.html?eref=rss_us
