King of Nepal is stoned by crowd |
Nepal's King Gyanendra has come under attack from a stone-throwing crowd as he travelled in a motorcade. The monarch, who was on his way to a pilgrimage site in Kathmandu to attend a Hindu festival, escaped unhurt. Nepal's king, traditionally regarded as an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, has become highly controversial since assuming absolute power in 2005. The attack is the first of its kind since he stepped down following nation wide protests in April 2006. King Gyanendra was on his way to the Pashupati temple in the capital for the Maha Shivratri festival when crowds chanting anti-monarchy slogans pelted his motorcade with stones. The BBC's Surendra Phuyal in Kathmandu says the situation remained tense at the temple for more than an hour as the monarch paid his respects in the temple premises. The local police chief told the BBC that they had to use force to control the unruly mob... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6369195.stm

Internet Buzzing Over Mystery Weapon Found in Iraq |
The photo of a "mystery weapon" found by GIs and a Web journalist in Iraq two years ago has captured the imagination of bloggers around the world eager to answer the question: What is it? The photo, which shows what appears to be a weapon, about 3-feet long, resembling a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, was taken by Michael Yon, a writer and photographer currently based in Iraq. He photographed the "weapon" in 2005 as he was cataloging a huge cache of munitions discovered by Iraqi police under a barn in Mosul and later destroyed by the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment. As U.S. military officials linked Iran to the Iraq weapons-supply chain on Sunday, Yon scanned his photos from the Mosul horde and decided to post the photo to his blog, www.michaelyon-online.com, prompting hundreds of responses to what it could possibly be.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,252409,00.html

7 Conservative Anglican Leaders Refuse to Take Holy Communion With Head of U.S. Church |
Seven conservative Anglican leaders refused Friday to take Holy Communion with the head of the U.S. branch of the church, who supports ordaining gays and blessing same-sex unions, in the latest sign the fellowship could be headed for a split. The boycott came at the six-day meeting of leaders of the 77-million-member Anglican Communion. "We are unable to come to the Holy Table with the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church because to do so would be a violation of Scriptural teaching and the traditional Anglican understanding," the archbishops said in a posting on the Church of Nigeria Web site. The primates, or Anglican leaders, all belong to a group known as the Global South theologically conservative bishops from Africa and elsewhere who have joined forces to expand their influence within the communion and counter liberal-leaning Anglicans.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2881196

German Paraglider Survives Being Lifted Higher Than Mount Everest |
A German champion paraglider said Friday she did not believe she would survive when she was lifted higher than Mount Everest by a thunderstorm that killed a Chinese paraglider in eastern Australia. Paragliding 2005 World Cup winner Ewa Wisnierska, 35, was lifted 32,612 feet above sea level by a storm Wednesday near Manilla in New South Wales state while preparing for the 10th FAI World Paragliding Championships next week, event organizer Godfrey Wenness said. A 42-year-old Chinese paraglider, He Zhongpin, was killed by the same weather system, Wenness said, apparently from a lack of oxygen and extreme cold. His body was found Thursday 47 miles from his launch site. A postmortem examination will be carried out Monday, police said. Officials and Wisnierska's ground team used her global positioning and radio equipment to track her ordeal. Wenness said Wisnierska soared from 2,500 feet to her maximum height in about 15 minutes.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,252405,00.html
