Share prices have fallen again on Asian stock markets, continuing a slide that began on Tuesday. The Nikkei index in Tokyo was down by 1.15% in morning trading, while the main index in Shanghai fell 1.7%. Markets are waiting nervously to see if pressure will ease, after the record 9% losses in Shanghai on Tuesday triggered a global stock slide. US shares recorded a modest rebound on Wednesday, but markets across Europe and Asia remained deep in the red. The upturn on Wall Street was not enough to ease the nerves of Asian investors. Chinese share prices fell again on Thursday morning, despite rising 4% on Wednesday after Tuesday's 9% fall. According to the Associated Press, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.7% by midday on Thursday. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index was 0.5% lower. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was down 0.46%, and in Tokyo the Nikkei index was also down.... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

McConnell fighting Bush's battles in Senate |
President Bush tomorrow will raise money for his political field general, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has stymied Democrats at almost every turn of the Iraq war debate. "We think Mitch McConnell is a terrific and able minority leader," said White House spokesman Tony Snow, who declined to comment on how Democrats have fared in their attempts to halt the president's surge of troops to Iraq. "You say Democrats are in disarray?" Mr. Snow said, feigning ignorance. With the congressional debate over the war at fever pitch, Democratic leaders who rode to victory last fall on the promise of bringing the troops home are under fire from virtually every direction. The far left is growing impatient with the lack of progress, while more conservative Democrats are unhappy with the ideas proposed so far. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070228-113750-1808r.htm

GE machines used to break law |
"A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." — Josef Stalin BANGALORE, India — The streets are cleaner here in the country's tech capital of Bangalore than elsewhere in India; still, squalor surrounds the modern glass-walled offices of dozens of American and European corporations. Security guards pursue anyone wishing to linger by the gates of General Electric's walled-off compound in the exclusive Whitefields suburb east of town. In 1990, the giant American multinational teamed up with Wipro Ltd., a Bangalore software provider, to manufacture and distribute a low-cost ultrasound machine. Why ultrasound machines? GE spokesmen have repeatedly refused to comment on the matter, but by 2000, according to www.gehealthcare.com, Wipro-GE had shipped out 6,500 of the machines in India. Wipro's Web site, www.wiprocorporate.com, claims it pioneered the manufacture of ultrasound equipment for India.... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20070228-113751-7882r.htm

Britain Plans to Recall First Batch of 1,500 Troops From Iraq Within 3 Months, Says Army Chief |
Britain will recall its first batch of around 1,500 troops from Iraq in the next two to three months, army chief General Richard Dannatt said Thursday. "We are following the plans that our government laid down and as announced in London, we are withdrawing the first 1,500 (troops) or so in the next two or three months," Dannatt, who is on an official visit here, told reporters. British Prime Minister Tony Blair last week laid out plans to withdraw around 1,600 troops from Iraq over the coming months and to further cut its 7,100-strong contingent by late summer if local forces can secure the southern part of the country. British troops will remain in Iraq until at least 2008 and work to secure the Iran-Iraq border, and maintain supply routes to U.S. and coalition troops in central Iraq, Blair has said. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2914032

Man Disputes 'Baby Sale' Allegations Man Arrested in Suspected 'Baby Sale' Says He Was Only Trying to Help 5-Month-Old Boy's Mother |
A man arrested on suspicion of trying to buy a woman's baby said Wednesday that the money he gave the mother was intended only as help. Jose-Juan Lerma, 47, and his wife, Irene, 27, were arrested Tuesday along with the 5-month-old boy's mother, Nicole Uribe, 23, on charges of child trafficking. Police suspected Uribe gave her baby to the couple in exchange for cash and a down payment on a used Dodge Intrepid. Court documents indicated Uribe had signed a document believing he was handing over custody to the Lermas. Jose-Juan Lerma told KUSA-TV in Denver and KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs that Uribe, who was living with the couple, had been weighing whether to give her son away. Uribe offered to let the Lermas care for the baby, Lerma said. The baby has been placed in foster care. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2914031
