John McCain, in an effort to reinvent himself as the candidate of the Republican establishment in the 2008 elections, has denounced the former Pentagon chief, Donald Rumsfeld, as one of the worst in history. Mr McCain's comments, made during a campaign swing through South Carolina, were seen today as part of a delicate balancing act for the senator from Arizona, who is trying to shed his image as a maverick and win over conservatives and the religious right. In that vein, Mr McCain has positioned himself as a strong supporter of the war on Iraq - as are the majority of Republican primary voters. But he accused Mr Rumsfeld of compromising that mission by failing to send enough troops for the invasion."We are paying a very heavy price for the mismanagement - that's the kindest word I can give you - of Donald Rumsfeld, of this war," Mr McCain told a community for retired people near the resort area of Hilton Head. "The price is very, very heavy and I regret it enormously."... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Wyoming's Sex Offender Rules May Attract Convicts From Other States; Lawmakers Promise Reforms |
Wyoming, with its wide-open spaces and crisp, clear vistas, is starting to worry it has made itself too attractive in one respect: Convicted sex offenders from out of state are moving in, apparently because the laws are less restrictive. "We don't want to become the playground for sex offenders," Attorney General Pat Crank said. "But there must be something that sex offenders are seeing. Otherwise they wouldn't be moving here in the kind of numbers that we seem to be seeing." Wyoming is home to about 1,200 known sex offenders. That is not a large number for such a sparsely populated state. But law enforcement officials and legislators are worried because 56 percent of those offenders moved to Wyoming after being convicted somewhere else. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2889777

Nato troops raid Karadzic homes |
Nato troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina have carried out early morning raids on the homes of the children of the indicted war criminal, Radovan Karadzic. A Nato spokesman said they believed Sasa and Sonja Karadzic to be part of a network supporting their father. Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serb leader during the Yugoslav civil wars, has been on the run for 11 years. He and his military chief, Ratko Mladic, are wanted on genocide charges by the UN tribunal in The Hague. The spokesman said that troops had to force their way into Sonja Karadzic's house because no-one had answered the door. Neither Sonja nor Sasa Karadzic were arrested, but they were questioned for several hours before the soldiers left. The soldiers also searched the homes and took away several items for "examination". ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6377711.stm

Tobacco firm wins payout appeal |
The US Supreme Court has thrown out a ruling that tobacco firm Philip Morris must pay $79.5m (£40.7m) in punitive damages after the death of a smoker. The narrow verdict is seen as good news for large firms seeking to limit the payouts that can be awarded by juries. The court decided 5-to-4 that the earlier ruling must be overturned. It said the jury had not been told that it could only fine the firm for harm done to the plaintiff, not to other smokers whose cases were not before it. The case was brought by Mayola Williams, whose husband Jesse died of lung cancer in 1997 after smoking for 40 years. Ms Williams sued the cigarette manufacturer for fraud on behalf of her husband. She had claimed that the jury decision was right because it had punished Philip Morris for a "massive market-directed fraud" over many years - misleading people into thinking cigarettes were not dangerous or addictive.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6379767.stm
