The Senate approved a measure early today to extend U.S. sanctions on Iran, at a time when the Bush administration is seeking to get other nations to agree to new economic restraints on the oil-rich nation. The legislation extends many of the provisions in the decade-old Iran-Libya Sanctions Act, which was aimed at punishing Iran for its nuclear program by blocking large-scale energy investments from European and other foreign companies. ``The regime in Tehran continues to defy the demands of the United Nations Security Council by refusing to suspend its nuclear enrichment program,'' Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said in a statement after the measure was approved without debate. The legislation ``strengthened one of our most important tools in the fight to keep nuclear weapons out of the mullahs' hands,'' he said. The House approved the same measure two days ago, and the legislation is expected to be signed by Bush. ...
