The Senate approved a measure early today to extend U.S. sanctions on Iran, at a time when the Bush administration is seeking to get other nations to agree to new economic restraints on the oil-rich nation. The legislation extends many of the provisions in the decade-old Iran-Libya Sanctions Act, which was aimed at punishing Iran for its nuclear program by blocking large-scale energy investments from European and other foreign companies. ``The regime in Tehran continues to defy the demands of the United Nations Security Council by refusing to suspend its nuclear enrichment program,'' Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said in a statement after the measure was approved without debate. The legislation ``strengthened one of our most important tools in the fight to keep nuclear weapons out of the mullahs' hands,'' he said.
