At the start of this war, Israeli leaders talked with some confidence of crushing Hezbollah. Now they seem ready to settle for pushing the guerrillas a few miles back from the Israeli border. Why the about-face? Hezbollah has largely withstood Israel’s 18-day aerial onslaught, and the guerrillas continue to slam rockets into northern Israel in the biggest assault on civilians in the Jewish state’s 58-year history. The realization has sunk in that Israel would have to launch a major ground offensive, with tens of thousands of troops waging house-to-house combat, to disarm Hezbollah. That’s a risk Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may be reluctant to take, in light of Israel’s previous bitter entanglements in Lebanon.
