The U.S. military has developed a ten-year plan for "deep storage" of munitions and equipment in at least six countries in the Middle East and Central Asia to prepare for regional war contingencies. The plans, revealed in March 2006 contracting documents, call for the continued storage of everything from packaged meals ready to eat (MREs) to missiles in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman, as well as the establishment of two new storage hubs, one in a classified Middle Eastern country "west" of Saudi Arabia ("Site 23") and the other in a yet to be decided "central Asian state." Though President Bush yesterday expressed the view that U.S. forces would stay in Iraq past 2008, the plans to continue to "pre-position" war materiel in the Persian Gulf region leave ambiguous whether the U.S. military foresees the ability to establish a permanent present in Iraq in the long-term. By 2016, the contracting documents show that the tonnage of air munitions stored at sites ... http://blogs.washingtonpost.com censor News |

Proposed FEC Rules Would Exempt Most Political Activity on Internet. They can shove these rules up you know where. |
The Federal Election Commission last night released proposed new rules that leave almost all Internet political activity unregulated except for the purchase of campaign ads on Web sites. "My key goal in this rule-making has been to make sure that the commission establish clear rules to exempt individuals who engage in online politics from campaign finance laws," said Chairman Michael E. Toner, a Republican. "We tried to craft a regulation that would allow the maximum amount of freedom for people as possible," said Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub, a Democrat. Most bloggers, individual Web users, and such Web sites as Drudge Report and Salon.com are exempted from regulation and will be free to support and attack federal candidates, much as newspapers are allowed. They miss the point on this, we are suppose to have free speech in this country, they cant regulate in any form or fashion what is a Right. Rights are not Privileges that they can change at their whim. ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/24/AR2006032402012_pf.html

Russia denies Iraq secrets claim |
Russia has denied providing Saddam Hussein with intelligence on US military moves in the opening days of the US-led invasion in 2003. "Similar, baseless accusations concerning Russia's intelligence have been made more than once," a Foreign Intelligence Service spokesman said. A US Pentagon report said Russia passed details through its Baghdad ambassador. One piece of intelligence passed on was false, and in fact helped a key US deception effort, the report said. The report also quoted an Iraqi memo which mentioned Russian "sources" at the US military headquarters in Qatar. "The information that the Russians have collected from their sources inside the American Central Command in Doha is that the United States is convinced that occupying Iraqi cities are [sic] impossible," said the Iraqi document, quoted by the Pentagon report. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4843394.stm

McCain Pressures Iraq to Form Government |
Sen. John McCain renewed pressure on Iraqi leaders to quickly form a new government in meetings Saturday, while more than 50 people were killed in violence, many in a gunbattle between Shiite militia forces and insurgents south of Baghdad. McCain, R-Ariz., was in the country with Sen. Russell Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq, just four days after another powerful group of American politicians traveled here to press Iraqi politicians to overcome their differences. ``The American people, no matter what party they are associated with, want the experiment of democracy to succeed,'' McCain said. Feingold did not speak, but nodded in agreement as McCain spoke about the future of Iraq. The delegation arrived in Iraq as the Bush administration has been applying extreme pressure on Iraqi politicians to form a government. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-5710801,00.html

Afghan convert 'may be released' |
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is leading efforts to resolve the issue of a man facing execution for converting to Christianity. A meeting is on in Kabul to discuss the fate of Abdul Rahman who "could be released soon" officials say. Mr Rahman is on trial charged with rejecting Islam. He could be executed under Sharia law unless he reconverts. The emergency meeting was called after growing international pressure on Afghanistan about the trial.
