UN condemns Ethiopia over rights |
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour has strongly criticised Ethiopia's human rights situation, calling it "worrying". Mrs Arbour, who is in Ethiopia visiting prisons, said conditions she had seen were "rudimentary" and "harsh". She said it was not right that detainees had been held in custody for a year without bail. Opposition leaders and journalists are among 129 people who have been denied bail after being accused of genocide. Mrs Arbour also said she was surprised that such serious charges, which also include treason, were brought after a series of opposition protests following allegations of election fraud a year ago. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4949624.stm

Projected Iraq War Costs Soar Total Spending Is Likely to More Than Double, Analysis Finds |
The cost of the war in Iraq will reach $320 billion after the expected passage next month of an emergency spending bill currently before the Senate, & that total is likely to more than double before the war ends, the Congressional Research Service estimated this week. The analysis, distributed to some members of Congress on Tue night, provides the most official cost estimate yet of a war whose price tag will rise by nearly 17 % this year. Just last week, independent defense analysts looking only at Defense Department costs put the total at least $7 billion below the CRS figure. Once the war spending bill is passed, military and diplomatic costs will have reached $101.8 billion this fiscal year, up from $87.3 billion in 2005, $77.3 billion in 2004 and $51 billion in 2003, the year of the invasion, congressional analysts said. Even if a gradual troop withdrawal begins this year, war costs in Iraq and Afghanistan are likely to rise by an additional $371 billion during the phaseout... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/26/AR2006042601601_pf.html

Putin condemns West over energy |
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of whipping up fears over Russia's energy exports. He said calls to restrict Russian energy to European markets made Moscow want to seek new markets for its oil and gas. He said he constantly heard complaints in Europe that the continent was overly dependent on Russian energy. The Russian leader made the comments after talks held in Siberia with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In a fierce defence of his country's reliability as a supplier of energy, Mr Putin said even during the Cold War, Moscow had always fulfilled its commercial energy contracts with European states. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4950624.stm

Pakistan's pro-Taliban tribes unite against army |
Pro-Taliban tribes in northwest Pakistan have buried ancient feuds and joined forces to fight the army, posing a new threat to President Pervez Musharraf's anti-militant drive, analysts and officials said. Up to 5,000 tribesmen are launching near-daily rocket and bomb attacks on military bases and convoys in the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, while the headless bodies of alleged US spies are dumped on the streets, they said.Brought together by religion and their hatred of Musharraf's ties to Washington, the tribes are stepping up their defiance of military efforts to control the region and flush out foreign Al-Qaeda suspects, they added."The unending bloodbath is alienating the Pashtun tribes, who are known to sympathise with the Taliban and the Al-Qaeda leader ( Osama bin Laden)," said retired Brigadier Mahmood Shah, who oversaw a 2003-4 operation to clear militants from South Waziristan, one of seven agencies in the tribal belt.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060427/wl_sthasia_afp/pakistanafghanistanattacksqaeda;_ylt=ArlZuTBShR5v9i9UVKRYxOpvaA8F;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--

Immigrant boycott aims to "close" US cities |
Pro-immigration activists say a nationwide boycott and marches planned for May 1 will flood Americas's streets with millions of Latinos to demand amnesty for illegal immigrants and shake the ground under Congress as it tackles reform. But while such a massive turnout could make for the largest protests since the civil rights era of the 1960s, not all Latinos, nor their leaders, were comfortable with such militancy -- fearing a backlash in Middle America."There will be 2 to 3 million people hitting the streets in Los Angeles alone. We're going to close down Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Tucson, Phoenix, Fresno," said Jorge Rodriguez, a union official who helped organize earlier rallies credited with rattling Congress as it debates the issue.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060427/ts_nm/usa_immigration_dc
