A woman whose parents are charged with kidnapping her on the eve of her wedding says she isn't about to forgive them. Julianna Myers, 21, suggested she doesn't want her mother to see her baby, who is due in May. "We have to protect our new baby. I don't trust my mom," she told the Deseret Morning News in a story published Friday. Myers said she's tired of hearing her parents describe her in TV interviews as a disobedient child who wants to see them in prison. "I'm past forgiveness," she said. Myers' parents, Lemuel Redd, 60, and Julia Redd, 57, are charged with kidnapping her Aug. 4 to stop her from getting married the next day. NBC reporter’s notes likely evidence in CIA case Judge orders network attorneys to court Monday to discuss issue |
A federal judge said Friday that he likely would allow NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell’s notes to be used in the CIA leak trial, setting up another potential fight between journalists and the court in the case. Mitchell’s notes on her conversation with former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby have been under subpoena for nearly a year, but U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton had ruled that, because Mitchell was unlikely to testify at trial, her notes would not be released. Attorneys for Libby said in court Friday that they planned to call Mitchell as a defense witness during his perjury and obstruction trial. Opening arguments are scheduled for Tuesday. Walton reversed course and ordered attorneys for NBC to be in court Monday to discuss the notes. He added: “I don’t see how I can deprive the defense of it.” ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16713426/

Woman to pay $3.75 million in husband's death |
A woman who killed her cheating husband by mowing him down with her car in a jealous rage was ordered Friday to pay $3.75 million to her in-laws. A jury awarded the sum in a wrongful-death lawsuit brought against Clara Harris. Harris, 48, repeatedly ran over her orthodontist husband, David, 44, with her Mercedes-Benz in 2002 in the parking lot of a suburban hotel after finding him there with his receptionist-turned-mistress. She was convicted of murder in 2003 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Harris squeezed her eyes shut when the judge asked for the jury’s decision. She took the stand during the trial, but repeatedly invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Defense attorney Dean Blumrosen said he did not want to risk having Harris say anything in the civil trial that might endanger her appeal of the murder conviction.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16713463/

World's oldest woman dies at 115 |
Julie Winnifred Bertrand, the world's oldest woman at 115, died in her sleep in a Montreal nursing home, according to Canadian media reports Friday. Bertrand, born September 16, 1891, in the Quebec town of Coaticook, passed away in her sleep early Thursday at the nursing home where she has lived for the last 35 years, her nephew told The Gazette in Montreal. "She just stopped breathing," said Andre Bertrand, 73. "That's a nice way to go." Bertrand became the world's oldest woman last month, after the death of Elizabeth Bolden, a Tennessee woman born on August 15, 1890, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The designation made her an instant celebrity. Bertrand's niece, Elaine Sauciere, said the fame her aunt acquired late in life was really quite "unbelievable."... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/americas/01/19/oldest.woman.dies.ap/index.html?eref=rss_world

War of words continues over Iraq |
Intensifying a war of words over a U.S. troop buildup in Iraq, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) accused Bush on Friday of playing politics with soldiers' lives, a charge the White House called "poisonous." "The president knows that because the troops are in harm's way that we won't cut off the resources," Pelosi, head of the Democratic-led House, told ABC's "Good Morning America. "That's why he's moving so quickly to put them in harm's way." Saying Democrats were waging a "sound-bite war," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino fired back: "Questioning the president's motivations and suggesting that he for some political reason is rushing troops into harm's way is not appropriate, it is not correct and it is unfortunate." The bitter exchange marked an escalation in the political fight over Bush's plan, unveiled last week to a skeptical public, to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq as part of a reworked war strategy.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070119/pl_nm/iraq_usa_dc
