Two key Republican senators said on Thursday they were optimistic they could reach an accord with the Bush administration to fix the system for trying foreign terror suspects struck down by U.S. Supreme Court. "The collaboration processes are good. They're talking to a lot of people, including me," Sen. Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record) of South Carolina said. President George W. Bush wants to push a bill through Congress this fall to allow trials of suspects held at the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after the court said the military commissions Bush set up were not in accord with U.S. or international laws.Administration officials in recent congressional hearings urged Congress to simply ratify the commissions system to give it legal backing, and the White House on Wednesday offered a rough plan that Senate aides said would largely preserve its system.... http://news.yahoo.com censor News |

FBI Target Turns Informant In Liberty City 7 Case |
CBS-4 News has learned a person targeted by the FBI early on in the investigation into the so-called Liberty City Seven had a falling out with the group and became a government informant weeks before the feds made arrests in the case. Court records obtained by CBS4's Brian Andrews say Master G.J.G. Atheea, a "Moses" like figure who wears dark glasses and carries a wooden staff, was accused ring leader Narseal Batiste's spiritual guide. After a falling out with the group, Atheea became an FBI informant, The FBI originally picked Atheea on wiretaps saying he was joining forces with Batiste in his mission to create a Moorish nation. In his conversations with Atheea, Batiste once again brought up the topic of the Princess cruise ship that caught on fire earlier this year. In that recorded conversation, Atheea responded, “That ain’t nothing compared to what divine father got laid up for us,” suggesting he may have known about Batiste’s plans to blow up the Sears tower.... http://cbs4.com/topstories/local_story_195154748.html

GOP Argues Statute of Limitations Had Expired When Democrats Filed Phone Jamming Case |
A lawsuit stemming from the jamming of Democratic phone lines in the November 2002 elections was filed after the statute of limitations expired and should be dismissed, Republicans argued in court Thursday. Lawyers for Republicans said the three-year statute of limitations had expired when state Democrats filed their complaint in late January. But state Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Sullivan testified in Hillsborough County Superior Court that Democrats did not know whom to sue until long after the actual phone-jamming, when information from a federal investigation became public. The hearing resumes Friday. The lawsuit, whose defendants include the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, seeks compensation for alleged GOP interference with phone systems amid a hotly contested U.S. Senate race between then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican John Sununu. Sununu won by about 20,000 votes. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2218859

Iran said on Thursday it was determined to produce nuclear fuel on its territory in defiance of international calls to halt the work and accused the United States of trying to prevent a negotiated solution to its dispute with the West."Based on law, Iran has planned to produce 20,000 MW of nuclear electricity in the next 20 years and needs to produce nuclear fuel inside the country for those reactors," chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said in a statement, read out on state television. He said Iran was still reviewing nuclear proposals backed by six nations and wanted talks to solve the dispute.
