June 21 (Bloomberg) -- A group loyal to al-Qaeda in Iraq said it has killed four kidnapped Russian diplomats, according to an Internet posting found by the Washington-based Search for International Terrorist Entities Institute. Russia did not pay any ``attention to the significance of its citizens,'' says a translation of the message by SITE researchers. The posting was by a group called the Mujahedeen Shura Council, SITE said on its own Web site. Two days ago the group gave the Russian government 48 hours to pull out of Chechnya and free Muslim prisoners in Russian jails, according to an earlier statement translated into English by SITE. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com censor News |

7 Marines, 1 Sailor Face Murder Charge Suspected Of Slaying An Iraqi Civilian Last April |
The Marine Corps on Wednesday planned to charge seven Marines and one sailor with murder in connection with the April death of an Iraqi civilian, a defense official said. At Camp Pendleton, Calif., where the eight accused service members are being held in a military brig, officials announced that a news conference would be held later Wednesday concerning the alleged killing of the Iraqi in the village of Hamdaniya. But the announcement did not mention murder or other charges. The official who disclosed the Marine plans asked not to be identified publicly because the official announcement was still pending. The allegation is that Marines pulled an unarmed Iraqi man from his home on April 26 and shot him to death without provocation. Seven Marines and one Navy corpsman from a Pendleton-based unit were taken out of Iraq and put in the brig there pending the filing of any charges against them. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/02/24/iraq/main541815.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_541815

Senate defeats Democrats minimum wage increase |
The U.S. Senate on Wednesday defeated a proposal pushed by Democrats to raise the federal minimum wage in increments from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour by January 1, 2009. Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), a Massachusetts Democrat, unsuccessfully tried to attach the proposal raising the wage for the first time since 1997 to a defense authorization bill that is expected to be passed by the Senate soon. While a majority of the Senate, 52 senators, backed the move to increase the minimum wage, it failed to win the 60 votes needed for passage under a procedural agreement worked out earlier.Operating under those same rules, the Senate was expected to also defeat a Republican-backed amendment that would raise the minimum wage in two steps to $6.25. But that measure also would change some work rules, drawing Democratic opposition.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060621/pl_nm/economy_wage_dc

Panel: Street gangs moving into suburbs |
Chicago street gangs are increasingly moving into the suburbs, driven by the demolition of housing projects that once hid their illegal activities and by the perception that police in smaller communities lack the experience to deal with them, a city crime commission found. "People in the suburbs can no longer view gangs as an inner-city problem," said Jim Wagner, the Chicago Crime Commission's president who helped write a 272-page report released this week. "It's a problem they can no longer ignore." The study surveyed 81 suburban police departments and found most had come into contact with gangs in their communities. The report attributed the shift to gang members' perception that suburban police aren't as well-equipped to scrutinize and disrupt drug dealing and other illegal activities. It also cited the tearing down of high-rise housing projects in Chicago "that were hideouts for gangs, incubators for gang crime and were often impenetrable to law enforcement," Wagner said.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-06-21-chicago-gangs_x.htm?csp=34

EU backs Bush on Iran, North Korea |
Bush today won a robust endorsement from European leaders for his tough approach to nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea, despite trans-Atlantic differences on Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and trade. European Union leaders emerged from a summit with Mr. Bush in this capital of cafes and cobblestones to back U.S. demands that North Korea abandon a long-range missile test and that Iran quit dragging its feet in responding to a Western plan aimed at getting it to suspend uranium enrichment activity. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today that his country will respond to the proposal by mid-August. Mr. Bush was cool to the time frame. "It shouldn't take the Iranians that long to analyze what is a reasonable deal," he said. "We'll come to the table when they verifiably suspend. Period." ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060621-115433-3438r.htm
