The state Supreme Court upheld Washington's ban on gay marriage Wednesday, saying lawmakers have the power to restrict marriage to unions between a man and woman.The 5-4 decision leaves Massachusetts as the only state to grant full marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. It was the latest in a series of significant court rulings favoring gay marriage opponents. Nineteen gay and lesbian couples seeking to marry had challenged the constitutionality of Washington's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act law, which limits marriage to heterosexual couples. Judges in King and Thurston counties overturned it in 2004, citing the state constitution's "privileges and immunities." The state appealed, arguing that it has a legitimate interest in regulating relationships that produce children. Germany signs Nazi files accord

Germany has signed an agreement to open for research purposes vast Nazi archives containing millions of files on Holocaust victims. So far, only survivors and their relatives have been able to get personal information from the archives. For many years, Germany had argued that giving wider access would violate its privacy laws. In May, the 11-nation commission in charge of the Nazi records decided that they would be opened to the public. The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Berlin on Wednesday. It has to be ratified by all the 11 members of the commission. This is not expected to happen before the end of the year. ...

India warns over US nuclear deal

Indian PM Manmohan Singh has said India will not accept any new conditions in the landmark nuclear deal with the US. A French court on Wednesday ordered Greenpeace to withdraw from its Web site information pinpointing fields of genetically modified (GMO) maize, a move the environmental group called censorship.Ruling on a complaint filed by two farmers who feared their commercial GMO maize fields may be attacked after details were published on Greenpeace France's Web site, the Paris court said the group had violated the farmers' privacy and ordered the map to be removed. 'Militants die' in Afghan clashes

Afghan and US-led forces have killed at least 22 suspected Taleban fighters in the past two days, officials say. The clashes are reported to have taken place on Tuesday and Wednesday in southern Helmand province. US-led forces say they killed seven insurgents in Garmser district on Tuesday. Afghan troops say they killed 15 militants in other clashes. Violence in southern Afghanistan has risen sharply this year, the bloodiest since the Taleban were ousted in 2001. ...
