At this time of week Pastor Russell Johnson begins sharpening his pencil. He's has got two more sermons to write before the mid-term elections on November 7, and he's got a job on. Up to 3,200 worshippers will turn up for prayer over next two Sundays at his Fairfield Christian Church in Lancaster, Ohio, that looks like the factory. It is, a factory of Christian conservatism. In addition to the congregation it has a mailing list of 560,000 homes, giving it a substantial outreach in a state famous for neck-and-neck election results.Pastor Johnson says his message will be that they must turn out to vote. He insists he doesn't tell them who to vote for, though you don't have to be a politics professor to know he backs the Republican senate candidate, Mike DeWine. "If there are al-Qaida sleeper cells here in Ohio I can tell you they are not voting for Mike DeWine," is how he puts it.This election year Pastor Johnson's evangelical vision is under threat. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk censor News |

Talks on new Israeli government |
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert has met his main coalition partner to discuss a deal allowing a right-wing party, Yisrael Beitenu, to join the government. Reports say Mr Olmert and the Labour leader, Amir Peretz, were expected to discuss terms under which Labour would stay in the reshaped government. The terms are believed to include proposals for improving benefits for Arab citizens of Israel. Israeli Arabs condemned the plan to let Yisrael Beitenu into the coalition. Yisrael Beitenu, which is led by Avigdor Lieberman, advocates the transfer of some Arab towns out of the state of Israel. Mr Lieberman has also accused some Israeli Arabs of treason for speaking to the Palestinian militant group, Hamas. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6084738.stm

Bush, under fire from voters over his policies in Iraq, declared on Wednesday that patience had its limits but said he would not put unbearable pressure on Iraq's leaders to end the bloodshed. Putin Says He Won't Seek Third Term Reaffirmation Comes With Promise That He Will Still 'Exert Influence' |
President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Wednesday that he would not try to run again for the presidency, but said he would retain influence over Russia even after leaving office in 2008 as required by the constitution. Speaking during a nationally televised question-and-answer session, the Russian leader also vowed that the perpetrators of the recent high-profile killings of a Central Bank regulator and well-known investigative journalist would be brought to justice. And he hailed the oil-rich country's newfound financial muscle that has sent the economy growing at an impressive rate of about 7 percent annually. “In all, I can say we are satisfied with how the country is developing, including the economy,” he said. Sounding by turns like a populist politician, lecturing professor and concerned father, the Russian leader fielded 56 wide-ranging questions or complaints lodged by phone, e-mail, text message and video link from around the country and the Ukrainian port that ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/25/world/main2122382.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2122382

Iraqi PM vows to tackle militias |
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has pledged to tackle illegal militias, which are widely blamed for the growing sectarian violence in the country. He said his forces would strike hard at anyone who defied the law. But he insisted he was working to his own timetable, not a US-imposed deadline for improving security. Mr Maliki also said there had been a lack of co-ordination with coalition forces over a raid in Baghdad's Sadr City that resulted in four deaths. Iraqi special forces went into Sadr City, a stronghold of the Mehdi army militia, overnight to try to capture "a top illegal armed group commander" who directed death squads in eastern Baghdad, a US military statement said. raqi forces came under fire and called for back-up from US aircraft, which used "precision gunfire only to eliminate the enemy threat", the statement said. But Iraqi police said the US troops shot at them while they were trying to take people injured in the raid to hospital. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6083176.stm
