Amid the Confederate flags, anti-Yankee bumper stickers and Civil War relics on display at Bob Moates Sport Shop, a counterattack against the North is under way. "Ask about the Bloomberg Gun GiveAway" reads a sign taped to the gun shop's register, beckoning customers to enter the drawing named for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose federal lawsuits against gun dealers in five states have drawn the wrath of Virginia's gun enthusiasts. Bloomberg says the dealers holding the contest are sick. The dealers call Bloomberg names that aren't fit to print. "The truth is, if Bloomberg hadn't picked on Virginia, we wouldn't have gotten involved. But he made the mistake of stepping into Virginia with this," said Philip Van Cleave, president of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League and mastermind of the giveaway, which has boosted business for the two participating store owners. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Superjumbo Jet Makes First U.S. Landings Airbus A380 Planes Makes Near Simultaneous Arrivals In NYC, L.A. |
The latest jetliner to claim the title of world's biggest passenger aircraft completed its maiden voyage to America on Monday, flying on football field-length wings and a prayer that the U.S. airline industry will want to buy the double-decker jumbo jet. The four-engine Airbus A380 touched down at Kennedy International Airport at about 12:10 p.m. EDT, to the cheers of onlookers gathered to watch the arrival. As the plane taxied, a pilot waved an American flag. Minutes later, a separate A380 arrived in Los Angeles, but was devoid of any passengers. The nearly eight-hour trans-Atlantic flight was a chance for plane builder Airbus and German airline Lufthansa AG to show off the jewel of Airbus' offerings to potential American buyers and to the airports they hope to turn into flight bases for the jet. The 239-foot-long A380 can seat as many as 550 passengers, hold 81,890 gallons of fuel, cruise at 560 mph and fly some 8,000 nautical miles. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/19/business/main2583744.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2583744

Police defend Zimbabwe travel ban |
Zimbabwe police say four opposition officials were prevented from going abroad at the weekend as they may still be charged with inciting violence. Two women officials wanted to go to South Africa for specialist treatment, after they said they had been beaten in police custody. Scores of activists were arrested and allegedly assaulted after police broke up an opposition meeting last weekend. An opposition MP said he was attacked by unknown men outside Harare airport. Those arrested were not charged when they appeared in court last week and have since sought medical treatment for their injuries. Meanwhile, the AP news agency reports that the US ambassador walked out of a meeting with Zimbabwe's foreign minister, at which he warned foreign diplomats against backing the MDC or risk being expelled from the country. The United States has said it holds Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe "personally responsible" for the recent attacks on opposition figures. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6465649.stm

Kabul suicide attacker targets US |
A suicide car bomber has attacked a convoy of US embassy officials in the Afghan capital Kabul. Officials say the bomber died and a number of people were injured. One is said to be in a serious condition. A US embassy spokesman said that the ambassador, Ronald Neumann, was not in the three-vehicle convoy. The attack is the first of its kind inside Kabul this year, although several deadly blasts last year were blamed on the Taleban. Eyewitnesses say the attacker drove a car at high speed into the vehicles on a road frequently used by Nato and US troops heading east towards Jalalabad. "There were some injuries, including one seriously injured who has been evacuated for treatment," US embassy spokesman Joe Mellott told the AFP news agency. Monday's attack comes as Taleban insurgents threaten to step up attacks on foreigners. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6465407.stm

A FAITH AND ITS OPPRESSORS The Chinese Unease about Falun Gong |
China's communists use torture and long prison sentences to repress Falun Gong, fearing that the fast-growing meditation movement might ultimately usurp their power. It was one of those beautiful nights in the hills west of Beijing. On September 23, 1993, a small crowd had gathered outside the Jietai Temple to celebrate the Festival of the Moon. Joining the few foreigners in attendance were several highranking army officers and party officials who lived in the ritzy neighborhood. All of them hoped to catch a glimpse of the full moon. One man seemed strangely out of place. His business card identified him as "Master Li Hongzhi" from the "Falun Gong" movement. A flier he distributed referred to Falun Gong as "the path to perfection." The character "Fa" means "law" and "Lun" stands for "wheel." These teachings, Li said, had already attracted tens of thousands of followers. ... http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,470648,00.html
