A United Nations anti-racism panel has questioned Israel's policy on preserving holy sites, asking the country to explain whether it protects places considered sacred to religions other than Judaism.Israel is expected to go later this week before the panel of 18 independent experts overseeing compliance with the United Nations' 38-year-old anti-racism treaty _ a hearing that could fuel the debate over an Israeli construction project at Jerusalem's disputed hilltop compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. The project has prompted protests among Palestinians and others in the Muslim world."To date, approximately 120 places have been declared as holy sites, all of which are Jewish," the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said in its list of questions, written before the recent furor over the construction project.... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

Rice summit ends with vague promise |
Israeli-Palestinian talks hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ended on Monday with little sign of progress on reviving long-stalled peace negotiations beyond a vague promise to meet again. The meeting, attended by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, focused partly on a unity deal between the Fatah and Hamas groups that has calmed factional fighting but cast a new cloud over peace prospects."All three of us affirmed our commitment to a two-state solution (and) agreed that a Palestinian state cannot be born of violence and terror," said Rice, reading out a joint statement after the more than two-hour meeting in a Jerusalem hotel. She said the two leaders "reiterated their acceptance of previous agreements and obligations," including a U.S.-backed peace road map charting reciprocal steps toward a Palestinian state, and that Olmert and Abbas would meet again soon.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070219/ts_nm/palestinians_dc

Rescuers Try to Reach Mt. Hood Climbers |
Rescuers who camped out on Mount Hood set out at daybreak Monday to try to reach three climbers who fell from a snowy ledge and were huddled in sleeping bags and cuddled with a dog amid ferocious winds and blowing snow. ``They are on the move,'' Russell Gubele, coordinating communications for the rescue operation, said of the rescuers. Other rescue teams from the ground were also on the way to the site, which is believed to be around the 8,300-foot level on the 11,239-foot mountain. The rescuers, about 30 in all were hoping to beat a snow storm expected later in the day. The three climbers, two women and a man, fell on Sunday. They are believed to be good shape. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-6426304,00.html

Thailand PM holds security talks |
Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has met security chiefs after a wave of bombings and shootings that killed at least seven people. Some 30 bombs went off in southern Thailand in one of the region's worst outbreaks of violence since a Muslim insurgency flared up three years ago. Schools, bars, hotels, a car showroom and a power station were targeted. Thai officials believe the attacks were timed to coincide with the start of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Speaking after the prime minister's emergency talks with military and security chiefs, Thailand's army chief-of-staff warned that there could be further attacks. "The violence may increase, and it will be the same kind of terrorist tactics," General Montri Sangkasap said. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6373719.stm

Westboro Church Protesters Show Up at Soldier's Funeral in Maryland. And make Asses of themselves |
Westboro Baptist Church joined the family, friends and fellow Marines who flocked to Oak Grove Baptist Church Friday to mourn Marine Cpl. Jennifer Marie Parcell, 20, killed the week before by a suicide bomber while serving at a military checkpoint in Anbar province, Iraq. The strangers were from a nationally known protest group that deplores homosexuality — Fred Phelps, Jr., his wife, Betty Phelps, his sister, Abigail Phelps, and fellow church member Lauren Drain — and they carried signs bearing mottoes like "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," "You will eat your children," and "Soldiers Die, God Laughs." Despite the unwelcome messages, the service proceeded without incident. The preacher eulogized Parcell as a soldier for both her country and the Lord. These nut cases think they are Christians, but are too stupid to know that what they do, Real Christians would not. ... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,252747,00.html
