Winter air temperatures over Antarctica have risen by more than 2C in the last 30 years, a new study shows. Research published in the US journal Science says the warming is seen across the whole of the continent and much of the Southern Ocean. The study questions the reliability of current climate models that fail to simulate the temperature rise. In addition, the scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) say the cause of the warming is not clear. It could be linked to increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere or natural variations in Antarctica's climate system. Scientists are keen to understand the change in temperatures over the continent as the region holds enough water in its ice to raise sea levels by 60 metres. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Catholic sex-abuse payouts still rising |
Sex-abuse accusations against the nation's priests were down last year, but the flood of millions of dollars in payouts more than tripled and shows no signs of stopping, the United States' Roman Catholic bishops said yesterday. "It is disheartening to us bishops, as it must be to all Catholics, to find that there are still some allegations of abuse by clerics against today's children and young people," Bishop William S. Skylstad, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), said during the release of the conference's annual report on sex-abuse statistics. The report, commissioned in 2002 by the USCCB's Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, tracks what the country's 195 Catholic dioceses are doing to end a sex-abuse crisis that has involved 12,537 youths -- mostly boys and young men -- and 4,827 priests.... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20060331-121834-5695r.htm

Workers fail to seal China leak |
Workers have failed in a third attempt to seal a poisonous leak from a gas well in the remote hills of the Chongqing region of China. Although there have been no injuries, around 15,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. In December 2003, a leak from a well in the same area left a total of 243 people dead. A cloud of toxic gas killed residents in their sleep in one of China's worst industrial accidents. Emergency workers have been unable to bring the gas well under control since it began leaking almost a week ago. They have been burning off the poisonous gas to prevent it from collecting in the area. State media reports that local officials have been struggling to raise emergency supplies for those left homeless. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4863420.stm

Meth lays siege to Indian country |
SAN CARLOS APACHE INDIAN RESERVATION, Ariz. — Something haunts the Dudley house atop a ruddy clay mesa in Apache country. It is the memory of a young man, David Justin Jackson Dudley, beaten to death at a January 2005 methamphetamine and booze party on the reservation. The entryway is a photographic shrine to the 20-year-old, who wanted to be an X-ray technician."We just kind of made it David's wall," explains the young man's father, Dennis Dudley. "We light candles every time we come home."Mary Jane Dudley sits in the living room, surrounded by half-finished Apache baskets. For months after David died, she could not weave. Now, she performs the ancient craft to lose herself in memories. "From the time I wake up to the time I go to bed is when I think about him," she says. "I haven't stopped crying."... http://images.usatoday.com/news/_photos/2006/03/31/meth-i2228.jpg
