Uganda must pay about $2bn (£1bn) in compensation to troops who served under ex-presidents Idi Amin and Milton Obote, judges have ruled. The country's appeals court said about 45,000 former soldiers had not been properly dismissed in 1979 and should receive back-pay. The Ugandan army vowed to appeal against the ruling. A spokesman said the ex-soldiers did not deserve to be paid and the military had no obligation towards them. Correspondents say it is unclear how the Ugandan government could afford to pay the former troops even if it were prepared to do so. However, the defence team expressed confidence that its clients would receive more than 20 years of back-pay. One man who served under Idi Amin said he was thrilled with the victory and would use the money to give up work and relax. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Efforts to secure Mr Johnston's release have been continuing. More than 20 journalists gathered to voice their support for Johnston who has been the BBC's Gaza correspondent for three years. Caution urged on climate 'risks' |
Two leading UK climate researchers say some of their peers are "overplaying" the global warming message and risk confusing the public about the threat. Professors Paul Hardaker and Chris Collier, both Royal Meteorological Society figures, are voicing their concern at a conference in Oxford. They say some researchers make claims about possible future impacts that cannot be justified by the science. The pair believe this damages the credibility of all climate scientists. Both men hold the mainstream view on climate change - that human activity is the cause. But they think catastrophism and the "Hollywoodisation" of weather and climate only work to create confusion in the public mind. They argue for a more sober and reasoned explanation of the uncertainties about possible future changes in the Earth's climate. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/6460635.stm

NY cops indicted in groom shooting |
Three New York police officers will be indicted on Monday on criminal charges for firing 50 shots at three unarmed black men, killing one on his wedding day, the head of a detectives' union said on Friday. The case has generated outrage among blacks in New York and prompted a series of protests. Michael Palladino, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association, told a news conference three New York Police Department officers would be indicted in the fatal shooting of Sean Bell hours before his wedding on November 25. Palladino said he had not been informed of the content of the indictments or whether the officers will now face trial for murder, as some in the black community have called for. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said he will announce the results of the sealed grand jury investigation at a news conference on 11 a.m. on Monday. Such investigations are secret. Brown said in a statement the results would remain sealed until Monday.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070317/ts_nm/newyork_shooting_dc
