Motaz Elshafi, 28, a software engineer, casually opened an internal e-mail at work last month. The message began, "Dear Terrorist." The note from a co-worker was sent to Muslims working at Cisco Systems in Research Triangle Park, N.C., a few days after train bombings in India that killed 207. The e-mail warned that such violent acts wouldn't intimidate people, but only make them stronger. "I was furious," says Elshafi, who is New Jersey-born and bred. "What did I have to do with this violence?" Reports of such harassment and discrimination against Muslims are rising, advocacy groups say. A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of 1,007 Americans shows strong anti-Muslim feeling. And the hard feelings are damaging the mental health of U.S. Muslims, suggest new studies to be released at the American Psychological Association meeting starting Thursday in New Orleans. ... http://www.usatoday.com censor News |

General sacked as Israel plans invasion |
Israel dramatically raised the stakes in the Middle East yesterday, approving an invasion of southern Lebanon involving tens of thousands of troops. At the same time, the army commander in charge of the Lebanese offensive was replaced by another general with a more aggressive reputation - a reflection of Israeli impatience about military progress. The decision by the 12-strong security cabinet left the door open to last-ditch diplomacy at the UN security council, but the diplomats were only given a few days to produce an acceptable compromise. That seemed as far away as ever yesterday, as the US and France clashed openly over a ceasefire plan that is opposed by Lebanon and other Arab states. Last night Tony Blair and George Bush discussed proposing a small, rapidly deployable UN force to help the Lebanese army re-enter the border zone.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1841088,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

Gunmen Attack Guyana Newspaper, Killing 5 and Wounding 4 |
Gunmen with automatic weapons stormed Guyana's largest newspaper, killing five people and wounding four in an attack that police said may be linked to the slaying of the South American country's agriculture minister in April. About 10 gunmen attacked just before midnight Tuesday, ordering employees in the printing department of the Kaieteur News to lie on the floor before shooting them and fleeing, acting Police Chief Henry Greene said. Police said five were killed and four wounded, revising their earlier casualty toll of six dead and three wounded. "We are launching a massive search for those who might be involved," Greene said Wednesday. "We have called out many of our ranks from homes." ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2294402

Zimbabwe seizes millions in cash |
Zimbabwean authorities have seized more than $50m worth of old banknotes at roadblocks and border posts in a crackdown on money launderers. People are rushing to make a deadline in 12 days' time to deposit their cash after the introduction of new currency. Anyone carrying more than $400 in old currency is liable to have it seized. The central bank head said last week over $80m worth was not in circulation, hinting it might be stashed outside the country for speculative purposes. The central bank unexpectedly devalued the currency last week, lopping off three zeros off banknotes, in an attempt to stem both corruption and hyperinflation of more than 1,000%. Banknotes worth about $40m were discovered in containers at Harare international Airport, Zimbabwe's Herald newspaper reports. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4777407.stm

U.S. forces repel raid on new base in remote eastern Afghanistan, kill 19 militants |
U.S. soldiers and warplanes drove off an insurgent attack on a new American base early Wednesday, reportedly killing 19 militants in an area where rebels are trying to resist a push by coalition troops into remote mountains of eastern Afghanistan. In the volatile south of the country, wracked by the bloodiest fighting in nearly five years, suspected Taliban rebels hanged a 70-year-old woman and her son from a tree, accusing them of spying for President Hamid Karzai's government, officials said. Meanwhile, Karzai, whose popularity has declined because of slow progress in reconstructing the war-battered country and poor security, signaled in an interview that he won't run for president again in elections slated for 2009. The raid on the U.S. base at Kamdesh in the eastern province of Nuristan — one of the country's wildest regions — was staged by extremists likely belonging to the Hezb-e-Islami militant group, who attacked from three directions ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-08-09-taliban_x.htm?csp=34

Prudhoe Bay raises questions about aging oil fields. The only question left is, how much can they charge Americans for gas, $5 maybe $7 a gallon? |
BP's problem of corroding pipes is worsening as the nation's largest oil field ages and more water and less oil is produced during drilling."Really, we are a giant water field," said Bill Hedges, BP PLC's corrosion expert, explaining that what comes up now during drilling is three-quarters water.Oil and gas production naturally contains water, carbon dioxide and bacteria, which are catalysts for corrosion. The shutdown this week of the Prudhoe Bay oil field because of severe corrosion found in transit lines is raising questions about the condition of the rest of the field. Oil first flowed at Prudhoe Bay on June 20, 1977.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-08-09-prudhoe-bay_x.htm?csp=34
