U.S. warplanes blasted a militia team firing rocket-propelled grenades yesterday, the second day of heavy fighting in a major offensive to drive Shi'ite Mahdi Army militiamen out of Diwaniyah, a farm-belt city south of Baghdad. North of the capital, in the increasingly dangerous Diyala provincial capital of Baqouba, police reported 21 more bodies dumped in the streets, victims of the intense sectarian warfare. All were shot execution-style and many had been tortured. At least 62 bodies have been found in or near Baqouba since Tuesday. A total of 58 persons were killed or found dead across Iraq yesterday in the eighth week of the U.S.-Iraqi security crackdown on the capital and surrounding cities and towns. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, meanwhile, said government officials from Iraq's neighbors, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and representatives of the Group of Eight industrialized nations would meet in Egypt early next month.... http://www.washingtontimes.com censor News |

Funds spat threatens Crawford Peace House |
With charges of money mismanagement, threats of court action and some members leaving, a group that has sponsored war protests in President Bush's adopted hometown has been anything but peaceful. The Crawford Peace House recently lost its corporate charter with the state, and a former member who now has rights to the name is threatening legal action because the group continues operating. Sara L. Oliver and others are calling for a state investigation to determine why only $14,700 is in its bank account, saying tens of thousands of dollars donated during Cindy Sheehan's 2005 war protest are unaccounted for. "There are people who have said, 'Don't say anything because you'll hurt the peace movement,' " Miss Oliver said. "But if the peace movement isn't pure and transparent and holy as it can be at its heart, then it's just like George Bush: lying, thieving, conniving, back stabbing ... ." ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070408-121649-7875r.htm

Pope Presides Over Easter Vigil Mass Benedict XVI Baptizes Eight People At St. Peter's Basilica |
Pope Benedict XVI baptized eight people during a candlelit Easter Vigil Mass in St. Peter's Basilica early Sunday, opening the most important event of the Christian Church calendar. Benedict started the Mass by blessing a large white candle and carrying it down the main aisle of the darkened basilica. Slowly, the twinkle of candlelight lit up the entire basilica as the faithful shared the lone flame. The Church considers the period between Good Friday, which commemorates Jesus' crucifixion, and Easter Sunday, which marks his resurrection, as the most important of all vigils. "In the resurrection of Jesus, love has been shown to be stronger than death, stronger than evil," Benedict said during his homily. He baptized six adults and two children — part of the joyful renewal Christians associate with Easter.... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/08/world/main2660856.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2660856

Five more years in Iraq, say defence papers |
Britain's "overstretched" armed forces will fight in Iraq for at least another five years. A confidential planning document drawn up by defence chiefs called the Operational Tour Plot, parts of which have been disclosed to this newspaper, reveals that troops will be serving on operations in the Gulf until at least 2012. News of the future operations can be revealed just three days after four soldiers, two of them women, were killed in a carefully planned ambush in Basra, taking the British forces death toll in Iraq to 140. Almost 100,000 of the 180,000 members of the country's armed services have now served in Iraq since the war began in March 2003. Two of the four provinces in southern Iraq are now under the control of official Iraqi forces. Maysan province is due to be handed over later this month and the Iraqi military should take official control of Basra province later this summer. But British troops will remain for at least another five years, the government documents reveal.... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/04/08/wiraq08.xml

13,000 Guard troops prepare for Iraq |
National Guard Staff Sgt. Gabe Robinson knows he will be married only a matter of months before he's likely to redeploy to Iraq, but considers himself lucky he's been home since 2004. Still, he worries about being injured."It's always in your mind," said Robinson, 32, who plans to marry in May. "Anyone who says they don't think about that, they are lying."The Oklahoma City resident is among the 13,000 National Guard troops in Oklahoma, Indiana, Arkansas and an as-yet unspecified state expected to be notified soon that they could be sent to Iraq around the first of next year, military officials say."There's always going to be some apprehension out there," said Capt. Brad Hanna, a chaplain in the Oklahoma National Guard who served in Afghanistan. "We're not in the position of making policy; all we can do is be ready to do what we're called to do."... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070407/ap_on_re_us/guard_deployment
