The US and Brazil, two of the main players in collapsed global trade talks, say they hope an agreement can be reached in the coming months. Long-running World Trade Organization (WTO) talks failed last week with blame being apportioned by all sides. The latest comments are important as the US was seen as blocking a deal over farm subsidies, and Brazil is head of a key group of developing nations. A deal could be reached within five to seven months, the two nations said. Negotiators from the US and Brazil have been meeting in Rio de Janeiro to see if they can revive talks that started more than four years ago in Doha. "Brazil and the US are leaders in this effort to help revive the Doha round," said US trade representative Susan Schwab... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

US urges restraint after Qana. |
The United States urged Israel on Sunday to take more care to avoid civilian casualties in Lebanon after an air strike killed 54 people in the village of Qana, but continued to resist calls for an immediate ceasefire. In a statement, the White House said that U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was working to arrange the conditions for a "sustainable" halt to the violence. "This was a terrible and tragic incident," White House spokesman Blair Jones said, referring to the bloodiest single attack in Israel's 19-day-old war on Hizbollah in which 37 children were among those killed. "We continue to urge the Israeli government to exercise the utmost care so as to avoid any civilian casualties. This tragic incident shows why this is so critical." We could end the slaughter very easy, but what is a few hundred dead and thousands wounded and all the property destroyed to those making all the money supplying the bombs? We talk peace, while we supply the munitions ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2253616

Israeli missiles hit several buildings in a southern Lebanon village as people slept, killing at least 56, most of them children, in the deadliest attack in 19 days of fighting. The Lebanese Red Cross said the airstrike in Qana, in which at least 34 children were killed, pushed the overall Lebanese death toll to more than 500. Survivors said civilians were killed when the building they sought refuge in collapsed. A Red Cross official said 56 bodies had been found so far. In response to the attack, angry protesters broke into the main U.N. building in Beirut Sunday, burning U.N. and American flags. Around 500 protesters massed outside the building, which was empty on the weekend day. Some pushed through police barricade, smashed windows and broke inside the building. Outside, demonstrators chanted slogans against Israel and the United States and denounced Arab governments for not doing enough to stop Israel's 19-day bombardment of Lebanon. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/28/world/main1844229.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1844229

34 children among 56 dead from Israeli airstrike |
Israeli missiles hit several buildings in a southern Lebanon village as people slept Sunday, killing at least 56, most of them children, in the deadliest attack in 19 days of fighting. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed "great sorrow" for the airstrikes but blamed Hezbollah guerrillas for using the area to launch rockets at Israel, and said he would not halt the army's operation. The Lebanese Red Cross said the airstrike in Qana, in which at least 34 children were killed, pushed the overall Lebanese death toll to more than 500. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice postponed a visit to Lebanon in a setback for diplomatic efforts to end hostilities. She was to return to the U.S. Monday morning, abruptly breaking off her diplomatic mission in the Mideast. Before the airstrike, Olmert told Rice he needed 10-14 days to finish the offensive in Lebanon, according to a senior Israeli government official. The two said they would meet again Sunday evening. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-07-30-mideast-violence_x.htm?csp=34
