Thirty eight people believed to have been held in secret CIA prisons - or black sites - are missing, according to a report by a US human rights group. The Human Rights Watch (HRW) report also details allegations of torture by a terror suspect who was held in secret custody for more than 2 years. The group has asked Bush to reveal the location of these detainees and close all US black sites. Last year Mr Bush said the prisons had all closed and had not used torture. In a televised address in September, Mr Bush admitted that 14 detainees had been held at secret CIA prisons that used interrogation methods that were "tough" but "lawful and necessary". "The United States does not torture," Mr Bush said at the time. "It's against our laws, and it's against our values. I have not authorised it - and I will not authorise it." He said the prisoners had since been transferred to the US military camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the CIA was not holding any more terror suspects. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Pa. Middle School Principal Accused of Dealing Meth, Police Find Drug in His School Office |
A middle school principal was charged with dealing crystal methamphetamine after police found the drug in his school office. John Acerra, 50, of Allentown was arrested Tuesday in his office at Nitschmann Middle School in Bethlehem, where police said they found meth on his desk. There was no indication that Acerra sold the drug to students, but Acerra did allegedly sell the drug from his school office after hours and on weekends, said Dennis Mihalopoulos, an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Police said they began investigating Acerra in early February after an informant told them the principal was using and distributing the drug. Acerra, who was in custody in lieu of bail, has an unlisted phone number and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney. Joseph Lewis, the Bethlehem Area School District superintendent, did not immediately return a call Wednesday. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2911811

Israeli raid 'will not keep TV station off the air' |
The wife of the owner of a popular television station in Nablus's old city vowed yesterday that it would return to the airwaves despite the arrest of her husband and the seizure of vital broadcasting equipment by Israeli soldiers. Sanabel TV went off the air after troops took away computers, digital cards, cassettes, DVD, video and other equipment early on Monday during a three-day operation to hunt down militants and explosives caches in the West Bank city. Nabegh Braik, 44, the owner of the station, which is the only one in the old city, specialises in grassroots programming that criticises the Palestinian authorities as well as Israel, and says it is not affiliated to any faction, was still in detention last night. His wife, Raida, 41, said she did not know why the station had been raided but added: "We will come back even if we have to buy new equipment piece by piece." Mrs Braik said the station regularly interviewed Palestinians whose houses had been targeted or occupied ... http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article2311308.ece

How the war on terror made the world a more terrifying place |
Innocent people across the world are now paying the price of the "Iraq effect", with the loss of hundreds of lives directly linked to the invasion and occupation by American and British forces. An authoritative US study of terrorist attacks after the invasion in 2003 contradicts the repeated denials of George Bush and Tony Blair that the war is not to blame for an upsurge in fundamentalist violence worldwide. The research is said to be the first to attempt to measure the "Iraq effect" on global terrorism. It found that the number killed in jihadist attacks around the world has risen dramatically since the Iraq war began in March 2003. The study compared the period between 11 September 2001 and the invasion of Iraq with the period since the invasion. The count - excluding the Arab-Israel conflict - shows the number of deaths due to terrorism rose from 729 to 5,420. As well as strikes in Europe, attacks have also increased in Chechnya and Kashmir since the invasion. ... http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article2311307.ece
