The US Republican Party has launched a controversial terror-linked TV advertisement to bolster support ahead of mid-term elections next month. The footage shows al-Qaeda leaders with captions of threatening statements, while the soundtrack of a ticking bomb plays in the background. The advertisement, which ends with the sound of a bomb exploding, is due to air from Sunday. Democrats have hit out at the commercial, calling it scaremongering. The strategy is to scare the so-called brave and not so free anymore, to vote for these assholes who has caused the problem in the first place. And if you think voting for Democrats will change anything other than replacing an empty suit for another, you just continue this charade. Get rid of all these assholes from both parties and let’s start with a new flock of Turkeys, just make sure they are not Republican or Democrats. Admit it, be honest with yourself, can we do any worse than what we have now? ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Home Office plans floating jails |
The Home Office is moving ahead with plans to use prison ships to ease overcrowding in prisons. Britain's last floating prison - HMP Weare, moored at Portland Harbour in Dorset - closed last year. The government has advertised for contractors to provide up to 800 places on ships in England and Wales. The move comes as the first prisoners were moved into designated police cells as part of the plans to alleviate the overcrowding crisis. Former prisons minister Ann Widdecombe, who oversaw the commissioning of HMP Weare in 1997, told the BBC the government had seen the crisis coming "for a long time and they have failed to act". She said she would not have decommissioned HMP Weare - and would have in fact commissioned another prison ship. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6072454.stm

Putin firm on EU energy charter |
Russian President Vladimir Putin has resisted EU calls to sign an existing international treaty on investment and trade in energy. But says he thinks Russia and the EU can agree binding rules. They begin talks on a new strategic partnership in the next few weeks, and Mr Putin says he is confident it would be possible to find common approaches. At an EU summit in Finland, Mr Putin also hit out at Georgian leaders, accusing them of building up forces. The EU has been trying for years to get Russia to sign the Energy Charter Treaty without success. It now wants to enshrine many of the treaty's principles into the new framework agreement with Russia. The aim is to make it easier for European companies to invest in the Russian energy sector, and to use Russian pipelines to export the oil and gas they produce... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6068386.stm

Iran 'blocks Israel soldier deal' |
Israel's ambassador to the UN has accused Iran of paying Hamas $50m to block the release of an Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants. The ambassador in New York, Dan Gillerman, made the claim without giving any further evidence or details. The payment, which Iran denies making, allegedly went to the head of Hamas' political bureau Khaled Meshaal. The soldier, Cpl Gilad Shalit, was captured in June in a cross-border raid from Gaza by Palestinian militants. Israel intensified its military campaign in Gaza following his capture in June, and the strip has been cut off from the outside world for long periods of time. Hamas, the militant group that runs the Palestinian Authority, says that in return for freeing Cpl Shalit, Israel must release some of the several thousand Palestinians held in its jails. I guess they have stopped saying he was kidnapped and admit he was captured. It was a stupid word game they played, but a lot of stupid people bought it... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6069092.stm

Iran Invites West For Uranium Talks Foreign Minister Defends Enrichment Activities But Is Open To Discussions On Its Nuclear Program |
Iran is inviting Western representatives for discussions of why Tehran is continuing uranium enrichment in the face of international sanctions threats, the foreign minister said Saturday. "We don't see any logic to suspending uranium enrichment. Enrichment of uranium by Iran is a legal action derived from its membership rights in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters. "But we are ready to hold talks about the reason for enrichment," he said. Iran has been locked in a standoff with the West over its nuclear program. A draft United Nations resolution on Iran is expected to be introduced in the Security Council early next week, and diplomats have said they would seek limited sanctions on Tehran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/21/world/main2112746.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2112746

Members of Palestinian Security Forces Block Roads Leading to President Mahmoud Abbas House |
Members of the Palestinian security forces fired in the air in Gaza City's main shopping district and burned tires near President Mahmoud Abbas' home Saturday to press demands for payment of salaries. Smoke wafted from the area of Abbas' home in Gaza City. Protesters also stopped cars from entering the area. The shots in downtown Gaza, packed with shoppers ahead of a major Muslim holiday, scattered panicked crowds. The protesters complained that not all members of the security forces have been paid ahead of Eid el-Fitr, the three-day holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. The holiday begins either Sunday or Monday, and children are traditionally given new clothes and toys. Targeted by an international aid boycott, the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority has been largely unable to pay the salaries of 165,000 civil servants, including 80,000 members of the security forces, ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2594283
