U.N. Estimates Nearly 6,000 Iraqi Civilians Died in 2 Months |
The United Nations released a report today estimating that nearly 6,000 civilians were killed in May and June as sectarian violence surged across Iraq, an announcement that was underscored by a suicide bombing that killed 53 people and wounded more than 100 in the Shiite city of Kufa today. Combined with the killing of 48 people in a mostly Shiite market area of Mahmudiya on Monday by gunmen suspected of being Sunni Arabs, today’s blast brings the death toll in large incidents to 150 over the last three days. But the report released today by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq estimates that the death toll day in and day out for the last two months has averaged about 100. Many of the dead were found individually or in small groups, often bound and showing signs of torture before execution. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/18/world/middleeast/18cnd-iraq.html?ex=1310875200&en=fdd8d1b19a81f0a0&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni said Israel may agree to UN peacekeeping forces in south Lebanon. ``We shall examine what solutions are suitable for us,'' Livni said at a press conference in Jerusalem after meeting with UN officials. These would include implementation of a UN resolution calling for militias to be disarmed and Lebanese army deployment in the south, she said. ... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aNr5eEwHEV8M&refer=top_world_news
