Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia are investigating the conduct of a government lawyer who nearly derailed the death-penalty trial of confessed al-Qaeda conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui by coaching witnesses on their testimony. The criminal investigation of Carla J. Martin, a lawyer with the federal Transportation Security Administration, was revealed in recently unsealed transcripts of a closed March 21 hearing in the Moussaoui case. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema said in the hearing that she had been "advised by the U.S. Attorney's Office that there may very well be a prosecution of her, at least they're looking at the possibility." Rob Spencer, the lead prosecutor in the Moussaoui case, responded that "the matter has been referred to a prosecutor in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and I believe they are handling the matter." ... http://www.usatoday.com censor News |

Mom Takes Cash for Son's Abuse |
A mother confronted a neighbor who allegedly raped her 7-year-old son and threatened to call police, but reportedly accepted $600 to let the man molest her son again, Florida authorities said. The 30-year-old unemployed mother was charged Tuesday with capital sexual battery and child abuse. The neighbor, Nicholas Quiles, 48, has been charged with capital sexual battery. Both are being held without bail. It couldn't immediately be determined Thursday if they had lawyers. The sexual assaults happened the first two weeks of February, Lt. Jeffrey Harrington said. The boy told his 11-year-old sister that Quiles did "bad things to him," detectives said. An anonymous tip led investigators to the neighbor and mother.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,189665,00.html

'If you start looking at them as humans, then how are you gonna kill them?' |
At a press conference in a cavernous Alabama warehouse, banners and posters are rolled out: "Abandon Iraq, not the Gulf coast!" A tall, white soldier steps forward in desert fatigues. "I was in Iraq when Katrina happened and I watched US citizens being washed ashore in New Orleans," he says. "War is oppression: we could be setting up hospitals right here. America is war-addicted. America is neglecting its poor."A black reporter from a Fox TV news affiliate, visibly stunned, whispers: "Wow! That guy's pretty opinionated." Clearly such talk, even three years after the Iraq invasion, is still rare. This, after all, is the Deep South and this soldier less than a year ago was proudly serving his nation in Iraq. The soldier was engaged in no ordinary protest. Over five days earlier this month, around 200 veterans, military families and survivors of hurricane Katrina walked 130 miles from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans to mark the third anniversary of the Iraq war. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1741699,00.html

Iran given stark nuclear choice |
Iran has been given 30 days to return to the negotiating table or face isolation, foreign ministers from the US and five other major powers warned. "Iran has a choice between isolation brought about through [uranium] enrichment" or a return to talks, Germany's foreign minister said. His comments reinforced a deadline in a statement by the UN Security Council, which urged Iran to halt enrichment. Iran has rejected the call, and insists its nuclear activities are peaceful. However, the ministers at the talks in Berlin said the US, Russia, China and Europe remained intent on a "diplomatic solution" to the dispute. The UK's Jack Straw warned sanctions could follow if Iran remained defiant, but Russia ruled out such a move. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4859540.stm

Pensioners now new kids on the bloc |
The biggest surprise of an Israeli election filled with surprises was the performance of the Pensioners' Party, a newly formed and unheralded political bloc that emerged with seven seats -- most going to men in their upper 70s. No one was more shocked than the pensioners themselves, who find themselves confronting national questions they had not prepared for when they announced their one-issue campaign for increased pension rights two months ago. "We haven't formulated a policy about issues like the pullback from the West Bank," said party leader Rafi Eitan, 79. The party will hold a caucus today to figure out what its policies actually are. The outcome may determine whether the golden agers are invited to take part in a ruling coalition led by Kadima party leader Ehud Olmert, who yesterday began informal talks to find a parliamentary majority supporting his positions. ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060330-121739-8576r.htm

Defiance and fear of settlers cast out into the wilderness |
A POSTER of Ehud Olmert put up at a bus shelter in the Israeli settlement of Beit El said it all. The eyes of Tuesday’s election victor had been slashed out with a razor. A slogan calling for his elimination was scrawled across his face. As Mr Olmert’s Kadima party began haggling with potential coalition partners yesterday, the 5,000 Jews of Beit El and tens of thousands of others in the remoter West Bank settlements were filled with dismay. The Israeli electorate, inspired by the success of last year’s Gaza withdrawal, had handed power to a man determined to sacrifice the smaller West Bank settlements to save the largest. Under Mr Olmert’s plan, up to 70,000 Jews will be removed from occupied Arab territory to allow 170,000 others to remain within Israel’s new, expanded borders. ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2110040,00.html
