Acting on behalf of Arab nations, Qatar circulated a draft U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday demanding Israel end its offensive in the Gaza Strip and release the Palestinian officials it has arrested. The draft faced immediate opposition from the United States and France, which called it unbalanced in its criticism of Israel. The document does not condemn the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian militants and makes no mention of Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel this week. France's ambassador said he would offer changes, but U.S. Ambassador John Bolton suggested that Washington opposed the resolution entirely. That raised the possibility that the United States, as a permanent member of the Security Council, would veto it. It has done so in the past ... http://www.newsday.com censor News |

Ruling Party's Felipe Calderon Wins Official Count in Mexico's Disputed Presidential Race |
The ruling party's Felipe Calderon won the official count in Mexico's disputed presidential race Thursday, a come-from-behind victory for the stiff technocrat. But his leftist rival refused to concede and said he'd fight the results in court. Calderon was already reaching out to other parties to build a "unity government," while his rival, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, blamed fraud for his narrow loss in the vote count and called on his supporters to fill Mexico City's main square Saturday in a show of force. With all of the 41 million votes counted, Calderon of President Vicente Fox's National Action Party had 35.88 percent to 35.31 percent for Lopez Obrador, of the Democratic Revolution Party. The two were separated by about 220,000 votes. Roberto Madrazo, whose Institutional Revolutionary Party controlled Mexico for 71 years until Fox's victory in 2000, had 22.27 percent, and two minor candidates split the rest.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2161360

Chicago Museum Joins Iran in Fighting U.S. Court Ruling; Tablets Ordered Sold to Pay Blast Victims |
The University of Chicago and the government of Iran have come together in a rare alliance against a U.S. court ruling that aims to compensate victims of a 1997 Jerusalem bombing by auctioning off a rare collection of Persian tablets. A U.S. court previously found Iran responsible for supporting Hamas, which claimed responsibility for the 1997 bombing that killed five people and wounded 192 others, and ordered Tehran to pay the victims $423.5 million. The only Iranian asset that U.S. authorities could get their hands on was a collection of ancient Persian tablets inscribed with one of the world's oldest alphabets, dating to between 553 B.C. and 330 B.C. The clay artifacts have been housed at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute museum since the 1930s. A federal judge ruled last month that the school must auction off the tablets, the proceeds of which would go to compensate the bombing victims. But the university said it would appeal. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2160361

Big Brother Bell Sympatico controversy puts Net surveillance in the spotlight |
Canadian Internet users were abuzz last week with reports that Bell Sympatico, Canada's largest Internet service provider, had opened the door to increased customer surveillance through changes to its user agreement. While Bell denied that the amendments were linked to the so-called "lawful access" initiative that may require ISPs to install new surveillance technologies, the furor associated with the story highlights Canadians' mounting concern with their online privacy. The Bell clause, which took effect June 15, advised subscribers that the company retains the right to "monitor or investigate content or your use of your service provider's networks and to disclose any information necessary to satisfy any laws, regulations or other governmental request." Few doubt that ISPs already monitor network usage and will disclose subscriber information, including usage habits, if required to do so under a court order. The new clause raised fears, however, that Bell was extending that scrutiny to the active monitoring of user content as well as escalating its willingness to disclose subscriber information without prior judicial oversight.... http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/technology/story.html?id=91478922-9a40-488f-8dda-5a3e41359ed0

Gaza sees bloodiest day of raids |
Twenty-two Palestinians and an Israeli have reportedly been killed in the bloodiest day of violence since Israel pushed into the Gaza Strip. Many of those killed in the air strikes and heavy fighting are militants but there are also civilian victims. Israel's operations, the biggest since it withdrew from Gaza last summer, began largely in the south in a bid to free a soldier captured by militants. But troops moved deeper into the north after rocket attacks on a city. Israeli officials deny any plans to reoccupy Gaza. The interior minister in the Hamas-led Palestinian government, Said Siyam, has called on the security forces to fight Israeli troops.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5153036.stm
