Turkey appears to be winning the battle against a bird flu outbreak that killed four children this month, with no new human cases reported since Jan. 18, but experts warned that the lethal H5N1 strain could still pose a serious threat to the country. Although it has not proved as deadly in Turkey as in East Asia, where more than half of those infected have died, a senior European Union health official warned Friday that more Turkish cases of bird flu in humans are likely. "I would not at all be surprised if there were sporadic cases" of humans being infected by the deadly H5N1 strain in Turkey, said Angus Nicoll, of the Stockholm, Sweden-based European Center for Disease Control and Prevention.... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Divided Iraqis judge Saddam trial |
Only two of the five original judges remain in post. Two defence lawyers have been killed and one has fled the country. The defence team has walked out. A senior defendant was dragged out by guards, hurling insults - and the man the world is watching walked out after a screaming match with the judge. Much of the world - or at least, much of the world's media - appears to have decided that the trial of Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants is something between a travesty and a farce. But though the world may be watching the spectacle slack-jawed with astonishment, this trial is not really for them. It is for the people of Iraq, who were ruled for so long by Saddam Hussein. So what do they think? ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4663114.stm

Lawyer: Saddam to boycott next session |
Saddam Hussein and his lawyers will boycott the next session of the deposed leader's trial in Iraq to protest what they say is the bias of the new chief judge hearing the case, Saddam's chief lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday. "There is an unanimous decision by the defense team to not attend Wednesday's hearing because of the comedy we witnessed in yesterday's trial," Iraqi lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi said as he arrived in Jordan from neighboring Iraq.Chief judge Raouf Rasheed Abdel-Rahman cracked down Sunday in a chaotic trial session, ordering one of Saddam's co-defendants and Jordanian lawyer Saleh Armouti expelled from the courtroom. The entire defense team left in protest and Saddam was escorted out after a shouting match in which he yelled, "Down with America!"Al-Dulaimi said the ousted leader would refuse to attend Wednesday.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2006-01-30-saddam-trial_x.htm?csp=34

Iraqis 'confirm' bird flu death |
An Iraqi Kurdish teenage girl has died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Iraqi health minister has said. Abdel Mutalib Mohammed Ali said the diagnosis had been confirmed, despite initial reports from a WHO laboratory saying test results were negative. However the AFP news agency quotes him as saying that further "testing showed indications of bird flu or even H5N1". A spokesman for the WHO in Geneva said further tests would be carried out at a laboratory in the UK to make sure. Iraqi officials are investigating the death of the girl's uncle who had also been suffering from flu-like symptoms. Four people have been killed in neighbouring Turkey by the H5N1 strain of the virus. The Iraqi minister has gone to the northern city of Sulaimaniya to meet health officials to discuss efforts to stop the spread of the virus. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4661916.stm

ID cards are of 'limited value'. But you’re going to get them anyway. |
ID cards would be of "limited value" against terror & would not have prevented the London attacks in July, says the reviewer of anti-terror laws. Liberal Democrat peer Lord Carlile said he had changed his mind on identity cards, which he had previously backed. "I can't think of many terrorist incidents, in fact I can think of very few... that ID cards would have brought to an earlier end," he told GMTV. The bill introducing the ID cards plan is currently going through Parliament. It recently suffered 2 defeats in the Lords, with peers wanting an entirely voluntary scheme, & ministers wanting people applying for new passports & driving licences to be obliged to go on the ID card register. "ID cards could be of some value in the fight against terrorism but they are probably of quite limited value," Lord Carlile told GMTV's Sunday programme. The only use of ID Cards is to track all citizens. When governments want complete control they use ID Cards. It’s a Police State practice... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/4659228.stm

Trapped Canadian miners rescued |
Rescuers in Canada have brought to the surface all of the 72 miners forced to take refuge in safety rooms after a fire broke out at their mine. The fire had been extinguished earlier, but the rescuers had to wait until the tunnels were cleared of toxic fumes to bring the miners out. Company officials said all the men were in good health. The accident happened at 0300 (0900 GMT) on Sunday in Esterhazy, in the central Saskatchewan province. When the fire broke out, about 40 of the miners were able to contact the surface and report that they were safe. But they were concerns for another 30 who could not be reached by radio. Once the fire was brought under control, some 20 hours later, rescue teams were able to make contact with the other group and establish they were all safe. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4660994.stm
