President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution that would give his nation until Aug. 31 to suspend uranium enrichment. Instead, Ahmadinejad insisted Tehran would pursue its nuclear program. “My words are the words of the Iranian nation. Throughout Iran, there is one slogan: ‘The Iranian nation considers the peaceful use of nuclear fuel production technology its right,”’ Ahmadinejad said. The Security Council passed a resolution Monday calling for Iran to suspend uranium enrichment by the end of August or face the threat of economic and diplomatic sanctions. Ahmadinejad said Iran will not give in to threats from the United Nations. “If some think they can still speak with threatening language to the Iranian nation, they must know that they are badly mistaken,” he said in a speech broadcast live on state-run television. ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12342825/

Israel Ready To Step Up Air Campaign Will Increase Lebanon Air Strikes When Cooling Off Period Ends |
Israel will step up its air strikes in Lebanon once the 48-hour cooling-off period ends at 7 p.m. EDT, says Justice Minister Haim Ramon. It may be hard for some Lebanese to tell: Israeli jets pounded Shiite villages in Lebanon on Tuesday, and also struck Hezbollah strongholds deep inside the country and other civilian areas along the Mediterranean coast. Heavy fighting on the ground raged Tuesday in the Lebanese border village of Aita al-Shaab, and Hezbollah television said 35 Israeli soldiers had been killed or wounded in the fighting, three Tuesday. There was no confirmation from Israel, but defense minister Amir Peretz said the war has gotten to a "very important stage," reports CBS News correspondent Dan Raviv. Without giving details, Peretz said Israel is paying a very high price. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/01/world/main1853364.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1853364

Waitress Checks ID, Is Shown Her Own |
A bar waitress checking to see if a woman was legally old enough to drink was handed her own stolen driver's license, which was reported missing weeks earlier, police said. "The odds of this waitress recovering her own license defy calculation," police Capt. Guy Turner said Monday. Maria Bergan, 23, of Lakewood, was charged Sunday night with identity theft and receiving stolen property. She was arrested at her home in suburban Cleveland and was jailed in Westlake to await a court appearance. The 22-year-old waitress, whose name was not released, called police last week and said she had been handed her own stolen driver's license by a woman trying to prove she was 21. The woman, who became suspicious of the delay as the waitress went to call police, fled the Moosehead Saloon, but her companion provided her name. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/01/national/main1853610.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1853610

UK troops killed in Afghan ambush |
Three British soldiers have been killed after a vehicle patrol was ambushed by militants in southern Afghanistan. A fourth soldier was seriously injured in the incident in the north of Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said.
