U.S. East Coast Has Greatest Odds of Hurricane Strike |
The U.S. East Coast and Florida are almost twice as likely to be hit by a major hurricane this year as the battered communities along the Gulf of Mexico coast, forecasters at Colorado State University said today. Five major hurricanes, with winds of at least 111 miles per hour (178 kilometers per hour), are likely to form in the Atlantic basin this year, and there's an 82 percent chance that at least one of them will hit the U.S., meteorologists Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray said. ``The odds of a major hurricane making landfall along the East Coast are more than twice the climatological average value this year,'' they said. ``Landfall probabilities for the East Coast are quite high'' because of ``favorable steering currents for East Coast landfall'' and a high value of a statistic used to track seasonal tropical storm activity. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aCG4D_Mg8ZVo&refer=home

Lawyer: 3 Officers Not Part of Probe |
Capt. James Kimber is one of three Marines whose names emerged amid a military criminal investigation into allegations that Marines shot and killed two dozen unarmed civilians in Iraq. But Kimber knew nothing of the deaths until after the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment returned from Iraq in March, his attorney Paul Hackett said. The killings in the western Iraqi city of Haditha happened Nov. 19. ``My purpose is to separate his name from the alleged war crimes that took place,'' Hackett told The Associated Press by telephone Tuesday. ``He's not under investigation for anything related to what has played out in the press.'' Separate investigations are trying to determine whether the killings were criminal acts and whether the Marines involved and their commanding officers tried to hide the truth. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-5857007,00.html

Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked off her bid for a second Senate term Wednesday, telling supporters to get ready for a Democratic sweep in November. ``When the dust clears in November, New York is going to have a Democratic government from top to bottom, and we're going to show the rest of the country what that means,'' Clinton told New York's Democratic state convention. She was unanimously selected as the convention's official designee for the nomination by more than 400 delegates chanting ``Hillary! Hillary!'' ``We have a great national leader here in New York,'' said fellow New York Sen. Charles Schumer as he nominated ``my partner, my friend'' for the convention's endorsement. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-5856995,00.html

Saddam defendant ejected by judge |
The half-brother and co-accused of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been thrown out of court for arguing with the judge. Barzan al-Tikriti, former intelligence chief, was ordered out by Judge Rauf Abdel Rahman, who accused him of using "poisoned words" at every session. It came as defence lawyers accused the prosecution of fabricating its case, charges the prosecution deny. Saddam Hussein and the seven others are charged with killing 148 Dujail men. One defence witness, speaking from behind a curtain to hide his identity, told the court he had been offered money by chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi to give false testimony. "He gave me $500 and they threatened me if I ever told anyone about it," said the witness, who told the court he worked at a US base. Mr Moussawi denied the claims and called for the witness to be prosecuted. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5033278.stm
