Preliminary tests have found that bird flu killed two more siblings in Indonesia, officials said Friday, as the country grapples with a separate outbreak involving the largest family cluster ever reported. Local tests found that a brother and sister from West Java who died earlier this week were infected by the H5N1 virus, said Nyoman Kandun, head of the Health Ministry's office of communicable disease control. The tests will be sent to a World Health Organization laboratory for further confirmation. WHO officials so far have confirmed 33 human deaths from bird flu in Indonesia, out of 124 worldwide. The latest victims, an 18-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister, died Tuesday in the state-run Hasan Sidikin hospital in Bandung, the capital city of West Java, said Achmad, an official at the ministry's special task force post for bird flu, who uses only one name. They died within hours of each other less than a day after arriving at the hospital, he said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

Boston cardinal launches abuse repentance |
On the altar of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Cardinal Sean O'Malley prostrated himself alongside two dozen bishops and priests, praying that God would forgive the damage done by the Roman Catholic Church's clergy sex abuse scandal. The start of the multiday pilgrimage Thursday through nine parishes in the Boston Archdiocese was supposed to be about hope and repentance, and apologizing to the victims in the abuse scandal. But as news spread that Dr. Robert Haddad, president and CEO of the archdiocese's health care system, resigned early Thursday amid allegations he harassed more than a dozen female employees with unwanted hugs and kisses, some questioned if church leaders are still responding too slowly, too secretly, to abuse claims."There are extraordinary and painful parallels," said David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/26/church.repentance.ap/index.html?section=cnn_us

Pope hails mentor at Warsaw Mass |
Pope Benedict XVI has celebrated open Mass in the centre of Warsaw, with more than 200,000 people in attendance. The pontiff arrived in Pilsudski Square in driving rain, to the cheers of sodden but resolute crowds waving the flags of Poland and the Vatican. In his sermon the German-born Pope paid tribute to his Polish mentor, John Paul II and the fruits of his papacy. On Sunday he will visit the Auschwitz death camp to pray for reconciliation between nations and faiths. Despite Friday's wet weather, police estimated that 220,000 people were crammed into the square, with tens of thousands more in side streets and parks. Many had slept in the square overnight, to be sure of obtaining a good position. Church bells pealed as the Pope, accompanied by 120 priests and bishops who celebrated the mass with him, ascended a metal, three-tiered platform for the ceremony. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5018482.stm

That has strengthened ties between civilians and soldiers, bringing a marked change in the way people will observe the holiday this year.
