Taliban militants overran a southern Afghan town where a contentious peace agreement was negotiated last fall, roaming through the town center, burning its government compound and threatening elders, officials and a resident said. A resident of Musa Qala said that 200-300 Taliban fighters had overtaken the town, took weapons from the police and destroyed the government center late Thursday. Col. Tom Collins, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force, said an "unknown number" of militants had apparently entered Musa Qala and that NATO had conflicting reports that tribal elders were temporarily taken hostage. ... http://www.cbsnews.com censor News |

Reports: Bomb Hoax Suspect Told Keep Quiet Friend Says Boston Suspect Said Marketing Firm Asked Him To "Keep Everything On DL" In E-Mail |
Friends of a Boston-area man charged in connection with a marketing ploy turned bomb scare say he was told to keep quiet even after the devices they had placed began causing a stir. The Boston Globe and ABC News are reporting on e-mails purportedly sent to a friend by Peter Berdovsky on Wednesday, while bomb squads were responding to electronic devices around the city. In the e-mail attributed to Berdovsky, he writes that an executive of the marketing agency that hired him to place the signs had called and told him to "keep everything on the dl" — dl standing for "down low" or quiet. The marketing firm — Interference Incorporated — has not returned calls from the Associated Press since Wednesday's episode.... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/02/02/national/main2426233.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2426233

Meatpacker: Immigration Raids Were Show Swift CEO Says Government Raided Meatpacking Plants As Show of Immigration Crackdown |
The head of meatpacker Swift & Co. said federal officials wanted a high-profile example of an immigration crackdown when they staged raids at its plants in six states in an identity theft investigation late last year. President and CEO Sam Rovit said the government rejected the company's offer to help in the investigation months before the Dec. 12 raids. "They were looking for a marquee to show the administration it was tough on immigration," he told the Greeley Tribune for a story published Friday. Rovit denied knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and told the newspaper his company complied with federal hiring practices to check applicants' immigration status. Rovit and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages from The Associated Press Friday.... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2844804

Russians get anxious feeling for orange snow |
There is nothing unusual about snow in the towns and endless forests of Siberia. But when locals in the small village of Pudinskoye woke up on Wednesday they immediately noticed something rather strange: the snow falling from the sky was orange. In fact, three regions of southern Siberia — a vast area of industrial towns, pine trees and the odd bear — today reported the same mysterious phenomenon. Not only was the snow not white, it also smelt bad. Most of the snow was orange. But some of it was red and yellow as well, officials confirmed, after scrambling to the affected areas to dig up samples. And it was also oily, they discovered. Russian officials in the Omsk region, 1,400 miles from Moscow, swiftly warned local residents not to touch the snow or feed it to their animals. "At the present moment we cannot give explanations for the snow, which is oily to the touch and has a pronounced rotten smell. We are waiting for the results of a thorough test on samples," Omsk's environmental ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,,2004868,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12

Florida storms claim 14 lives |
Storms carrying what was believed to be the state's deadliest tornado in a decade cut a path across four central Florida counties early Friday, killing at least 14 people, damaging hundreds of homes and littering fields with clothes, furniture and splintered lumber. Crews moved through the region searching for more victims and restoring power to thousands of residents. Dozens of mobile homes were destroyed near Lady Lake in Lake County, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando. Chairs, beds and clothes were strewn about yards, with debris hanging from trees. Some homes were tossed from their foundations, while others had their roofs ripped off. The Lady Lake Church of God was demolished, its pews, altar and Bibles left in a jumbled mess. The 31-year-old, steel-reinforced structure was built to withstand 150-mph winds, the Rev. Larry Lynn said.... http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20070202-125728-5841r.htm

CBO: Iraq surge could actually total 50,000 |
A new congressional report says the increase of 21,500 combat troops for Iraq proposed by the Bush administration could result in up to 50,000 troops actually being deployed to the region. The report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office bases that projection on the fact that the Bush plan is unclear about whether the 21,500 troops needed to quell violence are all combat troops or if that number already includes support forces. “Over the past few years, DoD’s practice has been to deploy a total of about 9,500 per combat brigade to the Iraq theater, including about 4,000 combat troops and about 5,500 supporting troops,” says the five-page report requested by Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., the House Budget Committee chairman, and Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., the House Armed Services Committee chairman. Spratt, the budget committee chairman and the second-ranking Democrat on the armed services committee, notes that about $379 billion already has been spent on the war in Iraq and ... http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/02/TNScbosurge070201/
