A suspect shot himself in the head while in the back of a police car with his hands cuffed behind his back, police said Monday. Oliver Neal III, 26, was in critical condition, police told the Philadelphia Inquirer. It was not immediately clear whether Neal was trying to kill himself or if he shot himself accidentally, police said. Israel ups the stakes in the propaganda war |
Amir Gissin runs what he calls '"Israel's Explanation Department". Which is why it is surprising to hear him admit that many Israelis think "the whole problem is that we don't explain ourselves correctly". Last week, as al-Jazeera launched an Arab view of the world into English-speaking homes worldwide, Gissin was a man under pressure. At the David Bar Ilan conference on the media and Middle East, he faced an audience of Israelis who were unhappy about the way the propaganda battle with Hizbullah was fought and lost during the war in the Lebanon. They wanted to know how it could be done better next time, because most people in Israel seem to think there will be a next time with Hizbullah soon. Gissin said the words of his English-speaking spokespeople could not compete with the power of the pictures of civilians killed in the Israeli attack on Lebanese towns like Qana. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329636899-103552,00.html

Atlantic hurricane season about to end, with no U.S. landfall |
Residents of the southern USA heaved a sigh of relief as a comparatively quiet Atlantic hurricane season nears its conclusion with none of the storms making U.S. landfall."The 2006 Atlantic basin hurricane season was much less active than the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but 2006 was also atypical in that there were no landfalling hurricanes along the U.S. coastline this year," leading hurricane expert William Gray said in a report released on Friday."This is the first year that there have been no landfalling hurricanes along the U.S. coastline since 2001, and this is only the 11th year since 1945 that there have been no U.S. landfalling hurricanes," said Gray, of Colorado State University. So far in the six-month season that ends on November 30, there have been nine named storms, the lowest number since 1997. Five of those storms developed in hurricanes, two of which were considered major.... http://www.usatoday.com/weather/hurricane/2006-11-20-season-ends_x.htm?csp=34

3 Students Killed in School Bus Crash Off Alabama Interstate; at Least 30 Other People Injured |
A school bus carrying high school students plummeted 30 feet off an interstate overpass Monday, killing three teenage girls and injuring at least 30 other people, several critically, authorities said. The bus ended up below the overpass, its front end crushed. Two teenage girls died at the scene, and a third died of injuries at a hospital, police said. "It looks like the bus plunged headfirst," police spokesman Wendell Johnson said. Police Chief Rex Reynolds said officers were looking for a small car that apparently came close to or struck the bus, causing it to plow through the guardrail on the elevated section of I-565. More than 30 students and the driver were taken to hospitals, he said. The bus was carrying students to the Huntsville Center for Technology, city schools spokesman Keith Ward said. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2668073
