Panic gripped people living along the coast near Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo after the sound of fighter jets was mistaken for a blast, officials say. The police initially said there had been an explosion about 15km (nine miles) from Colombo, caused by a sea mine planted by Tamil Tiger rebels. But the government said later that the sound had been caused by "a sonic boom" from fighter jets on a training run. There has been a surge of violence in Sri Lanka in the recent months. Police initially said Friday's explosion occurred near a site where they had arrested five suspected Tamil Tiger rebels last week. The rebels were apparently wearing diving gear and were laying sea mines. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Study: Vitamins Don't Prevent Cancer Calcium, Vitamin D Supplements Don't Cut Odds Of Breast Cancer |
Your parents may still tell you to take your vitamins, but a cancer doctor might hesitate. A recent study that found calcium and vitamin D supplements don't reduce the odds of developing breast cancer is the latest to deflate the cancer-prevention claims of some vitamin proponents. A federal science panel last month had concluded there is no evidence for recommending certain vitamin supplements for cancer prevention. Even the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement trade association, won't say vitamins prevent cancer. "There is no vitamin or mineral supplement proven to reduce the risk of cancer," said Eric Jacobs, a senior epidemiologist and vitamin specialist with the American Cancer Society. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/22/health/main1743964.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1743964

25 Gunned Down in Gangland-Style Killings in Iraq's Third-Largest City |
At least 25 people have been executed gangland-style in Iraq's third-largest city this week, with residents gunned down in ones and twos and bodies found scattered throughout Mosul. Elsewhere, five U.S. troops were killed in operations south and west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said Thursday, and police stormed a farm and freed 17 victims of a factory kidnapping. Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, has a mixed Kurdish and Sunni Arab population and a tradition of bad blood. The Kurds, who are largely Sunni Muslim but not Arab, have formed a prosperous autonomous region nearby after decades of oppression and mass killings under the Sunni Arab minority that ran Iraq until Saddam Hussein was ousted three years ago. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=2109884

U.S. Military: Dead GIs Were Alone Soldiers Killed During Insurgent Attack Stayed Behind During Patrol |
Two U.S. soldiers who vanished during an insurgent checkpoint attack and were later found slain had been left alone while other vehicles in their patrol inspected traffic, the military said Thursday. Previously, a witness had said insurgents managed to separate the three-Humvee convoy by opening fire and forcing two of the vehicles to give chase. Those reports now appear to be wrong, said Lt. Col. Michelle Martin-Hing, spokeswoman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. The two soldiers, believed to have been kidnapped by insurgents before their mutilated bodies were found this week, and a third soldier killed during the attack had been alone with one Humvee to guard a hydraulic bridge at a Euphrates River canal south of Baghdad. When the attack occurred, others in the unit could not see the vehicle and were checking on their colleagues by radio, Martin-Hing said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/22/iraq/main1742447.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1742447

Iraq Withdrawal Debate in Senate Stirs Memories of Vietnam Era. Once again, it was quagmire versus cut and run. |
The Senate yesterday defeated two measures proposed by Democrats calling on President George W. Bush to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq as lawmakers evoked the memories and lessons of the Vietnam War to argue for and against the administration's course in the Middle East. A proposal offered by Democratic Senator Carl Levin of Michigan to begin drawing down troop levels, with no deadline for full withdrawal, failed by a vote of 60-39. A plan by Democratic Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, calling for the withdrawal of the 127,000 U.S. troops in Iraq by July 1, 2007, was defeated 86-13. Republicans such as Senator Charles Hagel of Nebraska said the debate evoked the failure of political will that led to what they said was the defeat and betrayal of U.S. soldiers fighting another faraway war almost 40 years before. ``My generation worries about Iraq becoming, not the failure of our sons and daughters fighting in Iraq, ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a4GU8q9qXkcs&refer=home
