Hundreds of stranded migrants go ashore |
Up to 400 African and Asian migrants began disembarking in northern Mauritania on Monday from a battered freighter intercepted by the Spanish coastguard more than a week ago, witnesses said. The migrants were handed into Spanish police custody after Mauritania and Spain reached a deal following prolonged diplomatic wrangling over responsibility for the migrants found stranded on the Marine 1 freighter off the West African coast.Mauritanian and Spanish health personnel had set up a makeshift treatment center in the port of Nouadhibou to assist the migrants, some of whom were reported to be suffering from diarrhea and sea sickness.Consular officials from India, Pakistan and Guinea were also at the dock to meet the migrants, who said they were mostly from Indian Kashmir but were also thought to include nationals from West African countries including Guinea.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/02/12/mauritania.immigrants.reut/index.html?eref=rss_world

Snow Just Won't Stop in Upstate N.Y. Squalls dump over 12 feet |
The snow just won't stop. Intense lake-effect snow squalls that buried communities along eastern Lake Ontario for nine straight days diminished Sunday _ then started up again early Monday.Unofficially, the squalls have dumped 12 feet, 2 inches of snow at Redfield. If accurate, that would break the state record of 10 feet, 7 inches of snow that fell in nearby Montague over seven days ending Jan. 1, 2002, said Steve McLaughlin, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Buffalo.A weather service representative was being sent to Redfield on Monday to verify the total.... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/02/12/ap/national/mainD8N872980.shtml

Victory Is Not an Option The Mission Can't Be Accomplished -- It's Time for a New Strategy |
The new National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq starkly delineates the gulf that separates President Bush's illusions from the realities of the war. Victory, as the president sees it, requires a stable liberal democracy in Iraq that is pro-American. The NIE describes a war that has no chance of producing that result. In this critical respect, the NIE, the consensus judgment of all the U.S. intelligence agencies, is a declaration of defeat. Its gloomy implications -- hedged, as intelligence agencies prefer, in rubbery language that cannot soften its impact -- put the intelligence community and the American public on the same page. The public awakened to the reality of failure in Iraq last year and turned the Republicans out of control of Congress to wake it up. But a majority of its members are still asleep, or only half-awake to their new writ to end the war soon.... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/09/AR2007020901917_pf.html

Defense analyst: Weapons sent to Iraq from 'highest level' of Iran's government |
The US military has detected a significant increase in the number of sophisticated roadside bombs appearing in Iraq & believes that orders to send components for them came from the "highest levels" of the Iranian goverment, a senior defense analyst said Sunday. The analyst, briefing reporters on condition he not be further identified, that that between June 2004 and last week, more than 170 Americans had been killed by the sophisticated bombs, referred to by the military as "explosively formed projectiles." Those weapons are capable of destroying an Abrams tank. With the complete lack of any credibility, they want you to believe they are telling the truth this time. Well until they come clean on every lie they told and punish every last son of a bitch who lied or pushed those lies, I would be an idiot and so would anyone who was to believe anything they now say. Many thousands dead or maimed for life because of these lying bastards and why are they still not punished? ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2007-02-11-iraq-iran_x.htm?csp=34
