A jury said Friday that it was unable to come to a unanimous verdict in the hostage-taking and terror case of Latin American rebel leader Ricardo Palmera and asked a federal judge what to do. Palmera is accused of plotting to keep three Americans hostage after their plane crashed in Colombia. He is charged with hostage-taking, conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists. U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan told jurors to break for lunch and return at 1:30 p.m. EST. They had just began deliberating on Thursday. Palmera, who is better known by his nom de guerre Simon Trinidad, was extradited in late 2004 after his capture in Ecuador. A senior al-Qaida operative deliberately planted information to encourage the US to invade Iraq, a double agent who infiltrated the network and spied for western intelligence agencies claimed last night. The claim was made by Omar Nasiri, a pseudonym for a Moroccan who says he spent seven years working for European security and intelligence agencies, including MI5. He said Ibn Sheikh al-Libi, who ran training camps in Afghanistan, told his US interrogators that al-Qaida had been training Iraqis. Libi was captured in November 2001 and taken to Egypt where he was allegedly tortured. Man arrested in shooting of 5 people, 2 fatally |
A man was arrested Thursday after a series of shootings that left two people dead and three others wounded within a span of 10 minutes.All the shootings were in a three- to four-block area on the city's west side, Detroit police spokesman James Tate said. The shootings were believed to be random, police said.Killed were Arthur James Smith, 49, and Othelia Fry, 58, both of Detroit, police spokeswoman Yvette Walker said.Fry was shot as she sat in a vehicle in front of a day care facility, Tate said. There were no children at the day care at the time, and the shooting didn't appear to be related to the facility, he said.Smith and a man identified by the Detroit Free Press as Elton Ash, 51, were shot minutes later about a block away.
