Rio de Janeiro police clashed with armed men who staged new attacks on police stations during the night and early on Sunday in the city, which beefed up security for its dazzling New Year's eve party after an outbreak of violence last week.The trouble began on Thursday night, when 18 people were killed in a variety of attacks that initially seemed to overwhelm police. The death toll included two officers and seven suspects. Police also killed five suspects on Friday night. In one incident on Saturday night, armed men fired in the direction of a police station near Rio's center from a car. Officers fired back from the rooftop of an adjacent building and from the station, forcing the men to flee to a nearby slum. Nobody was hurt, police said. A few hours later a man was arrested carrying guns and a grenade not far from the same spot, police said.
