World powers are considering dropping U.N. Security Council discussion of Iran's nuclear program if Tehran agrees to suspend uranium enrichment, but could push for sanctions backed by the threat of force if the Islamic state refuses, diplomats said Saturday. Later Saturday, Iran's foreign minister rejected that possible approach to resolving its standoff with the international community, saying that Tehran would not give up uranium enrichment. Manouchehr Mottaki, speaking in Kuwait, told journalists that Iran supports halting talks in the council, but "suspending nuclear activities goes against our legitimate rights and is not part of the NPT (Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty)." The draft proposal on Iran is being considered by the five Security Council nations plus Germany and could still undergo revision before the six powers sit down Wed to approve it, said one of the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to reveal elements of the draft... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Iraq's first permanent government since the fall of Saddam Hussein was approved by parliament and sworn in on Saturday, despite the failure to fill two key ministry posts because of political disputes."The main problem now is security, and they could not appoint defense and interior [ministers]," said prominent Sunni Muslim politician Saleh al-Mutlag, who walked out of the proceedings."This session is illegal," al-Mutlag said. "They added seven ministries without getting approval." Al-Mutlag said he and others had asked the government to wait longer to try to fill the critical posts. U.N. panel sees Gitmo as torture |
A key U.N. panel yesterday joined European and United Nations leaders in urging the Bush administration to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects there violates the world's ban on torture. The report by the Committee Against Torture came as the U.S. military disclosed that prisoners wielding improvised weapons clashed with guards trying to stop a detainee from apparently committing suicide. The panel also said the United States should ensure that no prisoner is subjected to torture. The U.S. government insisted that it complies with the treaty, including at the lockup at Guantanamo. "It is important to note that everything that is done in terms of questioning detainees is fully within the boundaries of American law," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.... http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20060519-100900-9520r.htm

The cabinet includes members of Iraq's main Shia, Kurd and Sunni parties. Their prolonged failure to agree on a cabinet amid spiralling sectarian violence had brought warnings that Iraq was descending into civil war. At least 58 people were also hurt in the latest attack.
