Foreign spies are using charities and other groups in Russia as a cover for their activities, Moscow's foreign intelligence service chief says. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and charity groups were very attractive for foreign agents, Sergei Lebedev told a pro-Kremlin newspaper. He said tighter regulation of NGOs was necessary for state security. Mr Lebedev's comments come as Russia's parliament debates legislation which would increase controls over NGOs. There has been a storm of international protests over the proposed law, with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice expressing concern over the situation during a visit to Ukraine on Wednesday. The proposals have been strongly criticised by both foreign and domestic non-governmental organisations. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk censor News |

Syria says troops kill 8 militants in shootout |
Eight Muslim militants have died in a battle with security forces Thursday at a farmhouse in northern Syria, the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported. In the clash, the second with militants in Syria this week, soldiers shot and killed five extremists and three others committed suicide before they could be captured, SANA reported. The agency said the militants belonged to a "takfiri" group — a reference to militants who consider those Muslims who did not endorse their views to be infidels. "After an hour-long exchange of fire with members of the group, using various types of weapons, a huge explosion was heard inside the farmhouse. It appeared that three members of the group, wearing belts of explosives, had blown themselves up," SANA reported. ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-12-08-syriamilitants_x.htm?csp=34

Iran’s leader suggests moving Israel to Europe |
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday expressed doubt that the Holocaust occurred and suggested Israel be moved to Europe. His comments, reported by Iran’s official IRNA news agency from a news conference he gave in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, follow his call in October for Israel to be “wiped off the map”, which sparked widespread international condemnation.“Some European countries insist on saying that Hitler killed millions of innocent Jews in furnaces and they insist on it to the extent that if anyone proves something contrary to that they condemn that person and throw them in jail,” IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying. “Although we don’t accept this claim, if we suppose it is true, our question for the Europeans is: is the killing of innocent Jewish people by Hitler the reason for their support to the occupiers of Jerusalem?” he said.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10381451/from/RSS/

Man Blows Himself Up on Iraq Bus, Killing Up to 30 People; Jumped Aboard to Avoid Security Checks |
A suicide bomber who jumped on a bus after security checks had been completed detonated an explosives belt among passengers heading to a Shiite city Thursday, killing up to 30 people and wounding nearly 40, officials said. Most of those killed were on the bus, which was gutted by flames, but several people gathered around a nearby food stall were also killed, police said. A hospital official said at least 37 people were injured. Police said the attacker waited until the bus was slowly pulling away from the station, then jumped on board to avoid security checks. Police said the death toll was especially high because the blast triggered secondary explosions in gas cylinders stored at the food stall.... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1385597&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Tension within Iraqi tribunal taints justice hopes |
On the fifth day of Saddam Hussein's trial, as it looked more and more likely that the main defendant would not show up, a U.S. official working with the court suddenly succumbed to frustration. "I haven't got a damn clue what's going on," he snapped at a reporter quizzing him about the brewing chaos. "They don't tell us a damn thing," he said, marching away in apparent despair. It was an unwitting insight into a process that has been nearly two years in the making but which in just five days of stilted hearings spread over the past eight weeks has failed to impress many Iraqis or international observers. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1385584
