At least 32 reported dead of about 300 mostly Ethiopians and Somalis |
Human traffickers wielding knives forced about 300 African migrants to jump into the sea off Yemen early Friday, causing at least 32 to drown, a Yemeni security official said. The migrants, mostly Ethiopians and Somalis, were packed into two rickety boats that had crossed the Gulf of Aden from Somalia when their crews forced them overboard as they approached Yemen's coast, the official said. Survivors said those who stood up to the crew were stabbed, beaten and thrown overboard, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The incident is the latest case of abuse of people trying to get to Yemen from the Horn of Africa, where violence has escalated, especially since Ethiopia intervened in the armed struggle between Somalia's U.N.-supported interim government and Islamic groups.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17988811/

Iraqi, U.S. forces sweep through volatile Iraqi city |
Iraqi and U.S. forces clashed with Shi'ite militia loyal to the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday in a dawn operation aimed at returning the volatile city of Diwaniya to government control. In Ramadi, west of Baghdad, a truck bomb killed at least 10 people and wounded 24 in the latest in a string of attacks that have spewed poisonous chlorine gas into the air, three Iraqi police officers said. A fourth officer put the toll at 35 dead. The Iraqi government said this week it was extending a seven-week-old U.S.-Iraqi security crackdown in Baghdad to other cities as it seeks to halt the slide to sectarian civil war. While the crackdown has succeeded in reducing the murder rate in Baghdad, the government says militants forced out of the capital have turned other areas into new "killing fields."... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070407/ts_nm/iraq_dc

Pranksters Glue Doors Shut at California High School |
Students could not get into a California high school Friday after vandals plugged locks on all exterior gates and doors with super-strength glue."A teacher who always gets there early called me on my cell phone and said, 'Guess what?"' said Carlsbad High School principal Margaret Stanchi. "But I didn't guess this."Roughly 100 doors were sealed shut sometime before the first staff arrived, Stanchi said."The locks are so small that all they'd have needed to do was put the point of the tube in and squeeze a little," she said. "It doesn't take much to stop you from putting your key in the lock."... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,264702,00.html

Pleas for peace punctuate Good Friday commemorations |
Some in agony, others in ecstasy, Christians around the world marked Good Friday with prayer, processions and pleas for peace.Thousands of pilgrims, some carrying large wooden crosses and others holding candles, wound their way through the narrow lanes of Jerusalem's Old City, retracing the route the Bible says Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion. And in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI carried the cross at the beginning of the traditional Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum. He described the procession as, "a journey into pain, solitude and cruelty, into evil and death.""But it will also be a path trod in faith, hope and love, because the tomb which is the final stop on our way will not remain sealed forever," the pope said of Easter Sunday, when Jesus is believed to have risen from the dead.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/04/06/goodfri.roundup.ap/index.html?eref=rss_world

Disney Opens Weddings To Same-Sex Couples |
Same-sex couples who want to exchange vows in front of Cinderella's Castle now have the chance. The Walt Disney Co. had limited its Fairy Tale Wedding program to couples with valid marriage licenses, but it is now making ceremonies at its parks available to gay couples as well. “We believe this change is consistent with Disney's long-standing policy of welcoming every guest in an inclusive environment,” Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said Friday. “We want everyone who comes to celebrate a special occasion at Disney to feel welcome and respected.” The company said it made the change after being contacted by a gay couple who wanted to use the wedding service, which offers ceremonies at Disneyland in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disney's cruise ships. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/06/national/main2658827.shtml?source=RSSattr=U.S._2658827
