Saudi king offers Lebanon $1.5bn |
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has promised to give $500m to Lebanon to pay for reconstruction. He also approved $1bn for the Central Bank of Lebanon to support the economy. The Saudi monarch warned that Israel's military offensives in Lebanon and Gaza could ignite a war in the region. He is holding talks with Egypt's President, Hosni Mubarak, in the Saudi capital Riyadh ahead of a conference on Lebanon in Rome on Wednesday. Pressure on the Lebanese pound has risen over the past fortnight during the military action by Israel in response to Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border attack. Experts estimate the damage to the Lebanese economy at around $2bn, with investors and tourists fleeing, and believe that the government is set to lose out on $600m in earnings. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5214354.stm

Beirut And Haifa Still Under Attack Israeli Jets Bomb Lebanese Capital, Hezbollah Rockets Hit Israel Cities |
Just hours after the departure of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from the Mideast, Israel resumed its bombings of Beirut, while Hezbollah continued its rocket attacks into northern Israeli cities. A series of at least four heavy blasts were heard in Beirut, the first Israeli strikes in the city in nearly two days. A grey cloud billowed up from the capital's southern district, a Hezbollah stronghold that has been heavily bombarded. But there were no reports of casualties, and there may not have been any casualties, reports CBS News' Vicki Barker (audio). The neighborhood hit has been bombed so often in the past two weeks that most of the residents have fled, many now camping out at schools and public parks. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/25/world/main1832266.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1832266

Cyclist Hits Bear During Triathlon Bear, Woman Both OK After Collision At 40MPH In Colorado Foothills |
Triathlete Sabrina Oei was speeding downhill at nearly 40 mph, cycling through the Colorado foothills during a race, when something brought her to a sudden, painful stop: a bear. Oei, 31, slammed broadside into a black bear when it wandered onto the race course Sunday. She went airborne, then slid on her back across the pavement. She wasn't seriously injured and even finished the triathlon. The bear didn't seem to be hurt, either, scampering back into the woods. But the unusual high-speed encounter is a dramatic example of what experts are seeing across the West as drought forces bears to forage farther for food while urban development pushes into formerly wild areas. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/25/national/main1833579.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1833579

Iran activist 'snubs White House' |
Iranian dissident Akbar Ganji declined to meet White House officials during a visit to the US, he has told the BBC. Mr Ganji said he had been invited to discuss the current situation in Iran. The White House declined to comment. He said he rejected the offer because he believed current US policies could not help promote democracy in Iran. In a speech last week in Washington DC, he also criticised US policy in Iraq, saying: "You cannot bring democracy to a country by attacking it". He added that the war in Iraq had helped Islamic fundamentalism and hampered the democracy movement in the region. A group of Iranian dissidents met State Department official Nicholas Burns and Elliot Abrams, an adviser to the National Security Council, while Mr Ganji was in Washington last week. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5211840.stm
