THE United States is helping Morocco to build a new interrogation and detention facility for Al-Qaeda suspects near its capital, Rabat, according to western intelligence sources. The sources confirmed last week that building was under way at Ain Aouda, above a wooded gorge south of Rabat’s diplomatic district. Locals said they had often seen American vehicles with diplomatic plates in the area. The construction of the new compound, run by the Direction de la Securité du Territoire (DST), the Moroccan secret police, adds to a substantial body of evidence that Morocco is one of America’s principal partners in the secret “rendition” programme in which the CIA flies prisoners to third countries for interrogation. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other groups critical of the policy have compiled dossiers detailing the detention and apparent torture of radical Islamists at the DST’s current headquarters, at Temara, near Rabat. ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk censor News |

Iran celebrates ‘nuclear referendum’ On revolution anniversary, Tehran rejects pressure from West |
Iran’s hard-line president threatened to revise his policy of working within international atomic frameworks, as diplomats in Europe said the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency had stripped most of its surveillance equipment from Iranian nuclear sites. The diplomats, who demanded anonymity in exchange for revealing the confidential developments, said the move was part of retaliatory measures announced by Iran that have left the International Atomic Energy Agency with only the most basic means to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities. In Iran, thousands rallied across the nation Saturday to celebrate the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution and show support for Iran’s nuclear rights.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11286133/from/RSS/

Governor Nobody sneaks up on Hillary |
HILLARY CLINTON would make an excellent president, according to Meg Hirschberg, whose husband runs a hugely successful organic yoghurt company in New Hampshire: “She’s amazing and brilliant and smart and lovely.” So that’s a vote for Clinton in 2008, then? Not at all. Hirschberg is thinking of backing Mark Warner, the former governor of Virginia, a likable, low-key, moderate Democrat who won a traditionally Republican state and, by all accounts, ran it competently. At this stage, it is enough of a recommendation. “I don’t know a thing about him and I don’t care,” Hirschberg said last week as Warner listened to her husband explaining the finer points of organic farming. “I just want somebody with decent values who can win. It’s nothing to do with Hillary personally. It’s irrational and unfair, but she is polarising.” ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2036146,00.html

Snowstorm Barrels Into East Coast |
A developing nor'easter headed up the East Coast on Saturday with a threat of heavy snow, canceling flights and putting road crews on overtime but cheering up skiers in a region spared harsh weather for most of this season. Blizzard warnings were posted from the New York City area into eastern New England, where up to 15 inches of snow was possible, and a winter storm warning was issued for most of New Jersey, the National Weather Service said. Heavy snow warnings were in effect from eastern Kentucky to southeastern New York state. CBS News correspondent Julie Chen reports that forecasters are predicting a big dumping overnight - as much as a foot in the nation's capital. Plenty of families in Washington D.C. are hoping that the weatherman gets it right. By this time of year, Washington has usually seen about a foot of snow. There hasn't been any since the first week of December. The kids have missed it. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/11/national/main1307699.shtml?CMP=OTC-RSSFeed&source=RSS&attr=U.S._1307699

Bird flu found in Italy, Greece, Bulgaria |
The deadly bird flu has reached Western Europe, with Italy and Greece announcing Saturday they had detected the H5N1 strain of the virus in dead swans, while the European Union confirmed the presence of the deadly strain in Bulgaria. The announcement by Greece and Italy comes a day after the opening of the Winter Games in Torino, and marks the first time the potentially dangerous virus was detected in a EU country.Authorities in Italy, Greece and Bulgaria said there were no reports of people being infected, and Italian Health Minister Francesco Storace sought to reassure Italians that the outbreak posed no immediate threat to humans, as the virus had only affected wild birds."It's a relatively safe situation for human health, less so for animal health," Storace said.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-02-11-more-bird-flu_x.htm?csp=34

Abramoff, Bush Seen Together in First Photo in Time Magazine |
Bush and disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff appear together in a photograph on Time Magazine's Web site that represents the first published image of the two in the same room. Time posted the photo today. It shows Bush greeting the leader of an Indian tribe with adviser Karl Rove looking on and Abramoff in the background. The meeting took place May 9, 2001, at the executive office building next to the White House, Time said. Investigators are probing the activities of lawmakers and their staffs in connection with Abramoff, who last month pleaded guilty to defrauding clients and conspiring to corrupt public officials. Abramoff is cooperating with the Justice Department. When asked about Abramoff on Jan. 26, Bush said the lobbyist was just another face in the crowd and was probably among thousands of people who get photographs taken with the president. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aEDc1pQvKth0&refer=home
