Search teams headed for the summit of Mount Hood on Sunday, hoping to find the snow cave where one of three missing climbers made a distress call a week ago. Searchers got close to the 11,239-foot summit Saturday, reaching 10,600 feet before nightfall and worsening conditions forced them off the mountain. With the weather colder but clearer Sunday, they set out again from 6,000 feet and planned to make it to the top, Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said. "We have climbers on the way to the summit right now," he told Fox News. Crews expected to make better time in their ascent thanks to a path they beat in the snow Saturday, sheriff's Sgt. Gerry Tiffany said. The teams on the mountain were to be joined for a third day by a Nevada Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane equipped with infrared heat sensors that could detect a person against the cold backdrop of snow. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Britain’s Blair in Baghdad to boost Iraq PM Prime minister to stress 'process of reconciliation' on stop in Mideast tour |
British Prime Minister Tony Blair arrived in Baghdad on Sunday to lend support to the Iraqi government, which is under pressure from Washington to do more to stem worsening sectarian violence.Blair’s visit, part of a Middle East tour, takes place against a backdrop of Shiite-Sunni bloodshed that U.N. officials estimate kills more than 100 people a day and as the United States mulls a change in strategy.Violence in Iraq since the 2003 invasion has marred Blair’s final years in office, dividing the British public and his party, depleting his popularity ratings and reducing Britain’s credibility in the region, analysts say.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16247512/

Danish police arrest hundreds |
Police in Denmark have arrested some 300 demonstrators in the capital, after a protest against the closure of a youth centre turned violent. About 1,000 protesters in Copenhagen threw cobblestones, bottles and fireworks and erected barricades. Police used teargas to try to break up the protests, comparing the scene on the streets to that of a "war zone". The protesters are angry about orders for young squatters to leave a building occupied since 1982. Local government sold the centre in 2000 and tension has been building since the sale. "It was extremely violent," police spokesman Flemming Steen Munch said. "It's been many years since we last had to use tear gas on the streets." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6187213.stm

Thousands join pro-Kremlin rally |
Tens of thousands of members of the pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi rallied in the Russian capital, Moscow, to wish World War II veterans a happy new year. Police and the security service were deployed although the atmosphere was relaxed, with many participants dressed as Dyet Moroz, the Russian Santa Claus. It follows Saturday's demonstration by opponents of President Vladimir Putin. They were protesting against what they see as the increasing authoritarianism of the leadership. Organisers had hoped up to 5,000 people would attend Saturday's opposition rally. Some witnesses said their numbers were dwarfed by the police and security service presence. The demonstrations come 15 months before the next presidential election. Although Mr Putin is not eligible to stand, analysts believe his popularity is such that whoever he backs is assured of an easy victory. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6187675.stm

Hamas, Fatah Clashes Escalate Shots Fired At Palestinian President's Residence; One Young Woman Killed By Gunfire |
Fighting between the ruling Hamas movement and its Fatah rivals escalated Sunday, with an attack launched on the foreign minister's convoy followed by shots fired at the Palestinian president's Gaza residence in apparent retaliation, witnesses said. Neither President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah — who was not in his Gaza residence at the time of the shooting — or high-ranking Hamas member Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar were injured. The shots fired at Abbas' residence apparently came in retaliation for an attack on Zahar's convoy earlier Sunday, which Hamas supporters called an assassination attempt. "It appears the target was Dr. Zahar," said Taher Nunu, a spokesman for Zahar. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/17/world/main2274561.shtml?source=RSSattr=World_2274561

Gunmen kidnap dozens at Iraq's Red Crescent Assailants pack employees, visitors into trucks, leave women behind |
Gunmen in Iraqi army uniforms staged a mass kidnapping on Sunday at the office of the Iraqi Red Crescent in downtown Baghdad, police said. An official of the Iraqi aid group said the assailants abducted 20 to 30 employees and visitors, but left women behind. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns. Police, however, said they did not know how many people were kidnapped at the office in Andalus square. They said the gunmen arrived at the office in five pickup trucks. The Red Crescent, which is part of the international Red Cross movement, has around 1,000 staff and some 200,000 volunteers in Iraq. It works closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which visits detainees and tries to provide food, water and medicine to Iraqis. Several mass kidnappings have been carried out in the Iraqi capital in recent months, possibly by armed groups on either side of the sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shiites.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16247664/
