Prisoners were tortured and starved to death in a post-World War II interrogation camp run by Britain for former Nazis and others, a newspaper reported Saturday. The Guardian's report cited documents recently released under the Freedom of Information Act that described the suffering of some of 372 men and 44 women detained at the camp in Bad Nenndorf, a spa town in northwest Germany occupied by the British after the war. The camp was closed in July 1947, the Guardian reported. Many prisoners had been former Nazi party members or former SS members, rounded up to prevent any insurgency, the Guardian said. Other detainees included businessmen and industrialists who had flourished under Adolf Hitler's regime.... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

WTO deal snags over EU subsidy cuts |
A World Trade Organization (WTO) deal on ending farm export subsidies hit a snag at the last minute on Sunday because Brazil would not agree to a cut-off date of 2013 offered by the European Union, diplomats said. Indian Trade Minister Kamal Nath emerged from the overnight negotiations in Hong Kong saying there had been enough consensus on major sticking points to keep global trade talks alive. But, minutes later, the EU denied that a deal had been reached as the talks entered their final day, saying the "goalposts moved at the last moment.""Europe made a major effort to save these talks and proposed an end-date for the elimination of export subsidies," European Commission spokesman Peter Power told reporters. "We made the moves that were expected of us but the goalposts moved at the last moment."... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051218/ts_nm/trade_wto_deal_dc

Santas Go On Rampage in New Zealand |
A group of 40 people dressed in Santa Claus costumes, many of them drunk, rampaged through New Zealand's largest city, robbing stores and assaulting security guards, police said Sunday. The rampage, dubbed "Santarchy" by local newspapers, began early Saturday afternoon when the men, wearing ill-fitting Santa costumes, threw beer bottles and urinated on cars from an Auckland overpass, said Auckland Central Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty. She said the men then rushed through a central city park, overturning garbage containers, throwing bottles at passing cars and spraying graffiti on buildings. One man climbed the mooring line of a cruise ship before being ordered down by the captain. Other Santas, objecting when the man was arrested, attacked security staff, Hegarty said. The remaining Santas entered a downtown convenience store and carried off beer and soft drinks.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,179044,00.html

Hong Kong Police Begin Removing Hundreds of WTO Protesters |
Hong Kong police are removing hundreds of protesters blocking one of the city's main thoroughfares outside the World Trade Organization talks venue this morning, after the worst rioting in more than a decade. The demonstrators, mainly South Koreans, are being loaded into buses by police. This morning, police with loudspeakers offered the protesters a breakfast of bread, muffins and tea, and said that after breakfast, they would be arrested. The riots, Hong Kong's biggest since disturbances at Vietnamese refugee camps in 1995, were the also the largest test of the city's police force since Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997. WTO meetings in Seattle in 1999 and Cancun, Mexico, in 2003 also sparked civil disturbances. ``Protesters who brought chaos to Hong Kong yesterday may have had legitimate grievances; by resorting to violence, though, they have made their causes and arguments irrelevant,'' the Sunday Morning Post wrote in an editorial. ... http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a_JP8BVZ081Y&refer=home

Agents' visit chills UMass Dartmouth senior |
A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book." Two history professors at UMass Dartmouth, Brian Glyn Williams and Robert Pontbriand, said the student told them he requested the book through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program. The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Gestapo, the professors said. The professors said the student was told by the agents that the book is on a "watch list," and that his background, which included significant time abroad, triggered them to investigate the student further. "I tell my students to go to the direct source, and so ... http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/12-05/12-17-05/a09lo650.htm

Bush Raps Senators Over Patriot Act |
Bush said Saturday that senators who are blocking renewal of the terrorism-fighting Patriot Act are acting irresponsibly and standing in the way of protecting the country from attack. ``In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without this law for a single moment,'' the president said in a live broadcast from the White House of his weekly radio address. Senate Democrats, with the aid of a handful of Republicans, succeeded Friday in stalling the bill already approved by the House. The vote to advance the measure, 52-47, fell eight votes shy of the 60 votes required to end debate. ``That decision is irresponsible and it endangers the lives of our citizens. The senators who are filibustering must stop their delaying tactics and the Senate must reauthorize the Patriot Act,'' Bush said. Anyone who wrote, supported, passed or enforced this Treasonous so-called Patriot Act is actively helping to destroy the Constitution and must be held accountable... http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5486554,00.html
