Iraqi witnesses say they saw 2 US soldiers who survived an attack at a checkpoint near Baghdad being led away by masked insurgents to a pair of cars, The N Y Times is reporting in its Sun edition. "There are intelligence indicators [that] they may have been captured alive rather than killed," a senior military official told CNN on Sat night. One US soldier was killed in the attack, and a massive search was under way Sat for the 2 who are unaccounted for. The paper cited Iraqis in the area, who were interviewed by telephone from Baghdad, as saying the attack appeared to have been intended to lure some soldiers away and separate the force. What are we going to do if they put our soldiers in dog cages and treat them like we did those at Getmo? All that our stupid leaders have done to prisoners that fell into our hands may come back to haunt us. Remember our fearless leaders think torture is ok. I wonder if they would still be talking so tough if they were on the receiving end? ... http://www.cnn.com censor News |

How US hid the suicide secrets of Guantanamo |
After three inmates killed themselves, the Pentagon declared the suicides an act of 'asymmetric warfare', banned the media and went on a PR offensive. But as despair grows within the camp, so too does outrage mount at its brutal and secretive regime. In Guantanamo Bay's Alpha Block, the night was like any other: sweltering and seemingly endless. Although the temperature was down to the high 70s outside, the block's steel roof and walls were radiating heat, and in the two facing rows of 24 cells it felt little cooler than it had at midday. 'The nights are worse than the days,' the British former prisoner Shafiq Rasul recalled yesterday. 'You hear the rats running and scratching. The bugs go mad and there's no air. Especially where that block is: there's no breeze whatsoever.' ... http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,,1800218,00.html?gusrc=rss

Queen Elizabeth Celebrates Birthday Pomp And Pageantry Mark Official 80th Birthday At Buckingham Palace |
British soldiers in tall bearskin hats marched before Queen Elizabeth II and military jets saluted her with a flyby over Buckingham Palace on Saturday in the second round of celebrations of her 80th birthday. Thousands of Londoners and tourists — many waving small Union Jack flags — yelled "Happy Birthday!" to the queen, who waved back with a white-gloved hand. Elizabeth, wearing a deep purple coat and hat, rode down the mall near the palace in an ivory carriage built for Queen Victoria in 1842 for the ceremony at the Horseguards Parade ground in central London. Mounted members of the Household Calvary rode before her, clad in golden armor. The celebration was nearly interrupted when two father's rights activists wearing only Union Jack boxer shorts attempted to hurl themselves in front the queen's carriage. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/17/world/main1726478.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1726478

5 Teens Killed In New Orleans Shooting |
Five people ranging in age from 16 to 19 were killed in a street shooting early Saturday, the most violent crime reported in this slowly repopulating city since Hurricane Katrina hit last August. All were believed to have been gunned down in a volley of bullets on a street in the Central City neighborhood just outside the central business district. Three of the victims were found in a sport utility vehicle rammed against a utility pole and two were found nearby on the street. Authorities said they were looking for one or more suspects but did not elaborate. Capt. John Bryson said police think the shootings were either drug-related or some type of retaliation attack. A semiautomatic weapon was used and "multiple, multiple rounds" were fired, he said. ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/17/national/main1726465.shtml?source=RSS&attr=U.S._1726465
