International mediators have told the new Hamas-led Palestinian government that it must recognise Israel if it wants to be guaranteed continued aid. The Quartet of the US, the EU, Russia and the UN said aid would "inevitably" be affected as long as Hamas failed to renounce violence. The Islamist group won Palestinian elections in January. Canada last night became the first country to end contact with the administration and freeze funding.
