1,000 secret CIA flights revealed |
The CIA has operated more than 1,000 secret flights over EU territory in the past five years, some to transfer terror suspects in a practice known as "extraordinary rendition", an investigation by the European parliament said yesterday. The figure is significantly higher than previously thought. EU parliamentarians who conducted the investigation concluded that incidents when terror suspects were handed over to US agents did not appear to be isolated. They said the suspects were often transported around Europe on the same planes by agents whose names repeatedly came up in their investigation. More than 15,000 Romanians who fled areas flooded by the Danube River are crowded into tent communities and faced with dwindling food supplies, residents and volunteers said Wednesday.With waters still rising after about two weeks of flooding, hundreds have taken refuge on a hill overlooking Chiselet, a village of 3,400 people in south-central Romania.Some are in makeshift shelters made from plastic sheets, while others have crammed into army tents. Warren County Sheriff Jackie Matheny says Pamela Rogers is in court this morning. Embattled Solomons PM steps down |
The new Solomon Islands Prime Minister Snyder Rini, whose election last week triggered widespread rioting in the capital Honiara, has resigned. He announced he was quitting just before MPs were due to vote in a no-confidence motion against him. Mr Rini confidently predicted he would win the vote, but some of his key backers switched sides in recent days. His resignation was greeted with jubilation in Honiara, where people honked car horns and cheered.
