US trade pact causes row in Peru |
Peru's decision to sign a free-trade agreement with the US has provoked a domestic political row, with critics calling for the deal to be blocked. The deal, signed by President Alejandro Toledo in Washington, is politically sensitive, coming in the middle of presidential elections in Peru. Ollanta Humala, who is currently leading after the first ballot, urged Peru's Congress to block the deal. Supporters say it will boost trade, but critics warn it will threaten jobs. Mr Humala, the ex-army officer who is the frontrunner with 31% of votes counted so far, said he was not opposed to a deal in principle. But he said the agreement was wrong for Peru in its current form and should be redrafted. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4906092.stm

Ex-FEMA chief won’t work in Louisiana parish. Fired after Katrina chaos, Michael Brown rejects offer to be paid consultant. |
Under mounting criticism, former FEMA chief Michael Brown said Wednesday that he will not serve as a paid consultant to St. Bernard Parish, a New Orleans suburb hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. Brown, whose name became synonymous with government ineptitude after Hurricane Katrina, had planned to meet with officials in the parish Thursday to help them navigate the recovery process. He canceled his trip after residents protested. Brown made the decision after meeting in Orlando, Fla., with parish President Henry “Junior” Rodriguez, where both were attending a national hurricane preparedness conference. “I talked to Junior Rodriguez tonight,” Brown said Wednesday by telephone, “and I told Junior, ‘My offer still stands. If you need advice, I can continue to do that free of charge for you. But why should I come down there and stir up controversy?”’ Well at least he’s an expert at screwing up, so maybe that is why they wanted him. Have to keep up Government tradition... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12287227/from/RSS/
