A majority of Americans want the Bush administration to get court approval before eavesdropping on people inside the United States, even if those calls might involve suspected terrorists, an AP-Ipsos poll shows. Over the past three weeks, President Bush and top aides have defended the electronic monitoring program they secretly launched shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, as a vital tool to protect the nation from al-Qaida and its affiliates. Yet 56 percent of respondents in an AP-Ipsos poll said the government should be required to first get a court warrant to eavesdrop on the overseas calls and e-mails of U.S. citizens when those communications are believed to be tied to terrorism. Agreeing with the White House, some 42 percent of those surveyed do not believe the court approval is necessary. ``We're at war,'' Bush said. For Younger Jews in America, Israel and Sharon's Health Crisis Less of a Concern |
As Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's health deteriorated, a debate erupted thousands of miles away at a meeting of IKAR, a Los Angeles group trying to reinvent synagogue life for Jews in their 20s and 30s. A few argued that IKAR was not doing enough advocacy for Israel, especially as the nation faced a major shift in leadership. But the overwhelming majority said that wasn't their role. "They said part of what they love about IKAR is that we're not forcing people to make the claim that Israel is absolutely and fundamentally central to themselves as Jews," said Rabbi Sharon Brous, 32, leader of the community. "People are forming Jewish identities either without Israel at all or ambivalence toward Israel. It's not that they don't care. They're confused."... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1481872&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Turkish bird flu is deadly strain |
A teenage sister and brother who died of bird flu in Turkey this week were infected with the H5N1 strain of the virus, making it the first time that strain has killed humans outside East Asia, the U.N. health agency said Saturday. "The laboratory in the UK said that they have detected H5N1 in samples from the two fatal cases," World Health Organization spokeswoman Maria Cheng told The Associated Press. Cheng said the spread of the disease from East Asia, where it has killed more than 70 people, was "a concern," but the global risk assessment of a human pandemic was unchanged. The laboratory reported the results Saturday on the tests from a 15-year-old girl and her 14-year-old brother who died earlier in the week, Cheng said. ... http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/01/07/turkey.birdflu.ap/index.html?section=cnn_world
