Thousands of federal riot police, backed by armoured trucks and helicopters, have seized control of the Mexican city of Oaxaca from protesters after violent clashes left one person dead. Police wearing body armour and carrying riot shields and submachine guns were accompanied by water cannon and helicopters as they poured into the city yesterday aiming to remove demonstrators from the central plaza. By last night police had taken control of the square, occupied for months by a leftwing movement in a protest that began as a dispute over teachers' pay and conditions in May, but has since grown into a social revolt. Armoured trucks were deployed in the plaza early on Monday to prevent a possible counter-attack from the activists.
