N.J. lawmakers meet amid shutdown Governor urges compromise, wants state sales tax increase. They always want more money |
Gov. Jon S. Corzine urged lawmakers Tuesday to compromise on his $31 billion spending plan to increase the state's sales tax and approve a budget, which would end the state's government shutdown. "Make no mistake, people are being hurt and unfortunately more will be hurt in the days ahead," the governor told lawmakers during an unprecedented Fourth of July special session. The session came three days after Corzine started shutting down state government because lawmakers missed the July 1 constitutional deadline to approve a new budget. Without a budget, the government can't spend money. "All of us surely believe this circumstance must end," said Corzine, a first-term governor and former U.S. senator and Wall Street executive. Isn’t it wonderful that no matter what happens the so called Public Servants always get paid in these Government shutdowns. ... http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/04/nj.budget.ap/index.html?section=cnn_us

Bomb in Kabul wounds six, 12 Taliban killed in clash |
A bomb in the Afghan capital Kabul wounded more than 6 people on Tue and 12 Taliban insurgents were killed in a clash in the south where NATO forces are set to take control. Afghanistan is going through its worst phase of violence since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. In another incident, 5 Afghan laborers working at a US military base in the east were stopped on their way home and executed by the road, police said. Most of the violence has been in the south and east. Attacks in Kabul are rare. Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanizai blamed "enemies of the Afghan people" for the lunchtime blast in the crowded city center. The bomb was in a vendor's push cart. "A cart packed with explosives blew up on a corner by the Justice Ministry," he said. The blast shattered windows of the ministry and other buildings, and damaged cars. 6 people were admitted to hospital, 5 in serious condition, said Ministry of Health official Abdullah Fahim. Several people had superficial wounds... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060704/ts_nm/afghan_violence_dc

Gunmen kidnap Iraqi deputy minister, bodyguards |
Gunmen pulled the deputy electricity minister from his car in a busy Baghdad street on Tuesday, kidnapping him and 19 bodyguards in an audacious attack that underlined the vulnerability of Iraq's new government. The abduction, the second of a politician in three days, is a blow to attempts by Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's new national unity government to show Iraqis that it is coming to grips with the relentless insurgent and sectarian violence. There has been no let-up in bombings and shootings in Baghdad, despite a security crackdown. A bomb in a crowded market in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City killed more than 60 on Saturday, the worst such attack in three months. The prime minister's office said Deputy Minister Raad al-Harith was not linked to any of Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni or Kurdish parties. His religious affiliation was not known.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060704/ts_nm/iraq_dc

Japanese freighter fights off pirates |
A Japanese cargo ship on Tuesday foiled a pirate attack in the Strait of Malacca off Indonesia's coast, days after pirates raided two U.N.-chartered vessels in the same area, a maritime watchdog said. The attacks raised concerns about a resurgence of piracy in the strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes and a key link between Asia and Europe. In the latest attack, pirates on an unlit speedboat off Indonesia's Sumatra island followed the 26,989-gross-tonnage Japanese ship and tried to board it from the stern, said Noel Choong, chief of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur.A duty officer raised an alarm and the crew turned on floodlights and sprayed water from fire hoses, preventing the pirates from boarding, Choong said.... http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/07/04/pirate.attack.ap/index.html?section=cnn_world

Deadline Expires In Mideast No Word On Abducted Soldier's Condition; Israel Keeps Up Attacks On Gaza |
A deadline set by Palestinian militants holding an Israeli soldier expired early Tuesday with no sign that Israel was considering giving in to the demand to release prisoners. Instead, Israel kept up its attacks on Hamas targets in Gaza. Israel's Channel 10 TV reported a leaflet was circulating in the Palestinian areas in which the militants holding the soldier said they would issue no further information about the soldier after Israel ignored the deadline. The report could not immediately be confirmed. A day earlier, the militants indicated they might kill the captured soldier if their demands were not met. Calls after the deadline expired to Hamas leaders and to Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Hamas military wing, were not answered. There was also no word on the condition of the soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19. Though Israel rejected negotiations or prisoner releases and Hamas insisted Israel would have to pay a price for the soldier's return, there were ... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/04/world/main1774279.shtml?source=RSS&attr=World_1774279
