Pakistan's president said Saturday that an American missile attack last month killed a close relative of al-Qaida's No. 2 leader and a terror suspect sought by the United States. It was the first time that Gen. Pervez Musharraf has provided details about the terror suspects killed in the strike. Until now, he has only said that "foreigners" had died. "Five foreigners were killed in the U.S. attack in Bajur. One of them was a close relative of Ayman al-Zawahri and the other man was wanted by the U.S. and had a $5 million reward on his head," Musharraf told a gathering of tribal elders at the residence of the interior minister in the northwestern city of Charsada. ... http://abcnews.go.com censor News |

Fossett flies to non-stop record |
Adventurer Steve Fossett has broken the record for the longest non-stop flight in aviation history. Fossett, 61, took the record as he flew over Shannon in Ireland. In total he has flown 26,389.3 miles around the globe since lift-off on Wednesday. He planned to end his journey at Kent International airport at Manston but was forced to divert to Bournemouth. The aviator landed safely despite an electrical failure on his Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer aircraft. "That meant really we had to get him on the ground within 15 minutes to the nearest airport," said chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, Steve Ridgeway. "The plane wouldn't have made it to Manston [Kent International Airport]. "And we couldn't risk him ditching the aircraft. So it was essential to get him on the ground." ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4704762.stm

Bird flu hits new areas in Europe |
The deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus has reached three new European countries, officials have confirmed. The virus has been found in wild swans in Sicily, and other cases are suspected elsewhere in Italy, the country's health minister says. A specialist UK laboratory has identified the virus in dead swans found in northern Greece and Bulgaria. The H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed at least 80 people since early 2003, mostly in South-East Asia. Seventeen migratory birds which had fallen ill or died were recovered from the Italian regions of Puglia, Calabria and Sicily. Two of them - swans that were found in the Sicilian town of Messina - tested positive for the H5N1 strain, the Italian health ministry confirmed. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4704046.stm

Greeks confirm three cases of bird flu in swans |
Greece on Saturday reported cases of H5N1 bird flu in three dead swans, as the disease appeared to have been spread into the European Union by wild birds. "This is the deadly, the aggressive strain of the virus," Deputy Agriculture Minister Alexandros Kontos told Reuters. "The swans were probably flying to Africa because of the cold snap in central Europe." The swans were found in three separate areas around the Thermaikos Gulf south of the northern port city of Thessaloniki. Tests are also being carried out on a wild goose from the Aegean island of Skyros and the result expected within the week. "It was confirmed today by the EU lab in London that the three samples from dead swans had the pathogenic H5N1 strain of the virus," the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement. Italy and Bulgaria also reported cases among swans on Saturday. ... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1606948

Haiti poll may go to second round |
Latest interim results in Haiti's election suggest the presidential race will go to a second, run-off round. Former President Rene Preval, a one-time ally of ousted leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is now polling 50.2% with half the votes counted. Mr Preval needs at least 50% to avoid a run-off. His supporters are alleging fraud after seeing his share drop from more than 60% in first results issued. But international observers say the poll was free and fair. Another ex-leader, Leslie Manigat, has 11.4%, while industrialist Charles Henry Baker has 8.3%, latest results show. The country - the poorest in the Americas - is choosing a 129-member parliament as well as a new president. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4703138.stm

Guantanamo inmate set for Germany return: magazine |
A Turkish man held since 2002 in the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay can expect to be released in the coming months and returned to his home in Germany, the German magazine Focus said on Saturday. The German embassy in Washington was working to provide the security guarantees that the United States was demanding, such as continued surveillance, as a condition for the release of Murat Kurnaz, Focus said. The magazine said Kurnaz could be freed by mid-year. A government spokesman confirmed the German embassy was in talks with U.S. officials in a bid to end Kurnaz's detention. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who criticized the Guantanamo base before a trip to Washington last month, had discussed Kurnaz's case with U.S. President George W. Bush last month, the spokesman added. ... http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1606911
